Discover Null Meta anime’s 2027 release window, an Android comedy story, four main characters, animation studio Soigne, and director Kai Ikarashi.
What happens when an android attends high school but struggles with basic common sense? That is the unusual premise behind Null Meta, an upcoming anime adaptation of Kokamumo’s four-panel comedy manga. The television series was officially announced on October 18, 2026, with a 2027 release window, a teaser visual, and its main production staff.
The project has also attracted attention because Kai Ikarashi, who is directing Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, will make his television anime directorial debut with the adaptation. Here’s everything to know about Null Meta, including its release date, characters, story, and animation studio.

When Does Null Meta Anime Release?
Null Meta is scheduled to premiere in Japan sometime in 2027. However, the exact release date, broadcast schedule, voice cast, and international streaming arrangements have not yet been announced. Aniplex revealed the adaptation alongside its first promotional visual and the opening of the official anime website. The announcement confirmed that Soigne will handle animation production.
The anime adapts Kokamumo’s manga, which began as a web comic in 2018 before receiving regular serialization in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Max magazine in 2020. Six collected volumes had been published by January 2026. Although the series has a relatively simple premise, its unusual characters and unpredictable comedy have helped it develop a following among manga readers.

What Is Null Meta About?
The story follows Kurumi Uozumi, an artificial human who attends high school despite being an android. Her official designation is NULLOID:01 KURUMI, but her everyday life looks surprisingly ordinary until her unusual behaviour starts causing trouble. Kurumi lives with Chiaki Soen, her guardian and the daughter of the scientist who created her. Chiaki has considerable technical knowledge and regularly experiments with Kurumi’s capabilities, attempting to improve her artificial friend’s features.
Their lives also involve two other girls: Sakina Agoshi, a calm and easygoing bookworm who enjoys watching the chaos around her, and Shiyuki Takada, who often appears to be the only sensible member of the group. Together, the four navigate school life, experiment with Kurumi’s upgrades, and spend time talking about seemingly insignificant things.
However, Kurumi’s artificial nature does not make her particularly intelligent. Her unpredictable actions and the group’s equally unusual reactions turn ordinary situations into comedic incidents. Rather than following a continuous adventure with major villains or world-ending threats, Null Meta focuses on everyday interactions, character personalities, and absurd humour. Its appeal comes from watching four very different girls turn mundane activities into entertaining chaos.

Who Are the Main Characters?
- Kurumi Uozumi: The central character is an android with human-like characteristics but questionable common sense. Her unusual behaviour drives much of the comedy, while her artificial nature gives Chiaki plenty of opportunities to experiment with new features.
- Chiaki Soen: Kurumi’s guardian and closest companion, Chiaki is technically skilled and enjoys modifying the android. Her relationship with her father, Kurumi’s creator, is complicated.
- Sakina Agoshi: Chiaki’s childhood friend, Sakina is generally relaxed and composed. She often finds amusement in situations that leave the others confused.
- Shiyuki Takada: Known as the group’s apparent voice of reason, Shiyuki provides a contrast to her friends’ unpredictable personalities, although she is not always as sensible as she appears.
The production team has not announced the anime’s voice cast yet.

Which Studio Is Animating Null Meta?
Soigne is producing the anime, with Kai Ikarashi directing the series. Tatsuya Takahashi is handling series composition and scripts, while Shin Ogasawara is responsible for character designs. Ikarashi’s involvement is particularly noteworthy because of his work on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. However, Null Meta is a very different project, placing greater emphasis on relaxed conversations, character interactions, and slice-of-life comedy. Will Kurumi and her friends turn their ordinary school days into one of 2027’s most entertaining comedy anime?
