Dilip Doshi Dies In London

Yesterday, as India and England were involved in a Slugfest on the 4th day of the Headingley Test, the news of Dilip Doshi’s death trickled in. One of India’s finest left-arm spinners breathed his last after a cardiac arrest in London. He was 77.

Dilip Doshi, A 33 Test Veteran

It was indeed a sad day for Indian Cricket. A true gentleman, Dilip Doshi, hailing from Bengal with roots in Gujarat, played 33 Test Matches for India between 1979 and 1983, taking 114 wickets with 6 five-wicket hauls and a fine average of just over 30.  Indeed, he was a terrific bowler who bowled with great accuracy and guile.

Dilip Bhai, The Bespectacled Magician

Dilip Bhai, as he was popularly known, was probably the first of bespectacled cricketers in India and made his debut against Australia at Chennai in 1979, post the retirement of Bishan Singh Bedi. He was 32 then, and though he had missed his prime years, he made the best of his tenure with India.

Dilip’s Best In India’s Win At MCG in 1981

His best came through against Australia at the MCG in 1981 when his five-wicket haul with an injured toe, along with Kapil Dev’s brilliant performance, helped India record a magnificent win.

Dilip Doshi-A Successful Cricketer and Businessman

Dilip Doshi played his last test match in 1983 against Pakistan as his career began to taper down. The advent and rise of Maninder Singh, a left-arm prodigy of Bishan Singh Bedi, and with age catching up, Dilip Doshi’s career came to a halt. However, he moved to England and played for Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire for a decent length of time. Dilip Bhai did well at whatever he laid his hands on and became a successful businessman in the UK. His sudden passing away after being seen at the World Test Championship Final at Lord’s has come as a shock to the cricketing fraternity of his time.

Bidding Adieu To One Of India’s Finest Cricketers

Dilip Doshi’s passing away is indeed a loss to Indian Cricket. Former players like Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri, Sachin Tendulkar, and several others expressed their grief and condolences on X. BCCI also came out with a statement, condoling the demise of one of India’s finest cricketers.
