Team Spirit overcame a difficult start and two overtime battles to defeat FUT Esports and win the CS2 Esports World Cup in Paris.
What makes Team Spirit’s victory so memorable is not simply the fact that they won it, but the hardships they had to overcome before finally lifting the trophy. The 2026 Esports World Cup CS2 Grand Final was never going to be an easy one for Spirit. Standing between them and the championship was FUT Esports, a team that had already shown it had enough strength to challenge the favourites. And from the very first map, FUT made sure Spirit knew they were not going to give the trophy away easily.
The Final Begins With a Shock
The Grand Final was played as a best-of-five series, meaning the first team to win three maps would become the champion. Team Spirit entered the final with confidence, but FUT Esports had other plans. The opening map, Cache, quickly became a warning for Spirit as FUT managed to take it 13-10. Suddenly, the favourites were behind, and the pressure that comes with a Grand Final began to grow.
For Spirit, losing the first map meant there was very little room for mistakes. FUT only needed two more victories to become champions, while Spirit had to find a way to turn the entire series around. This is where many teams can lose their confidence, but Spirit didn’t allow one bad map to decide their fate.
The Fightback Begins
The second map, Anubis, showed a completely different Team Spirit. They looked more composed, more confident and more willing to fight for every round. But FUT refused to let them have an easy time. The map became a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to create a comfortable advantage. Eventually, the score reached overtime, putting even more pressure on both sides.
This was the moment when Spirit needed to keep their heads clear. One mistake could have given FUT a 2-0 lead, but Spirit managed to hold their nerve and eventually won Anubis 16-13. The series was level again, and suddenly the final had a completely different feeling. But the hardest part was still waiting.
Another Map, Another Overtime
Ancient brought another test. Spirit now had the momentum, but FUT were not willing to let it disappear. Round after round, the two teams continued to trade blows, with neither side able to completely take control. Once again, the map went into overtime.
Two teams were now fighting not just for rounds but for the psychological advantage that comes with winning a second consecutive close map. Spirit had already survived one overtime, and now they had to do it again. They did.
Spirit eventually took Ancient 16-14, moving ahead 2-1 in the series. They were now just one map away from the championship, but FUT had pushed them to the limit. The final had already gone through two overtime maps, and the question was whether Spirit could finally finish the job or whether FUT would force a fifth map.
Nuke Changes Everything
Then came Nuke. After two extremely close maps, nobody expected what happened next. Team Spirit came out with a completely different level of intensity and took control almost immediately. They dominated the opening half and built a huge 10-2 lead, leaving FUT with an enormous mountain to climb.
FUT tried to fight back, but Spirit were no longer allowing the same opportunities they had given them earlier in the series. Every round seemed to strengthen Spirit’s confidence, and every lost round made FUT’s comeback harder. Eventually, Spirit closed Nuke 13-5. The team that had lost the first map had now won three consecutive maps. The comeback was complete.
Donk Leads the Way

At the centre of Spirit’s success was Danil “Donk” Kryshkovets. The young star was named the tournament’s MVP after another impressive performance, and his contribution throughout the competition showed why he has become one of the biggest names in Counter-Strike 2.
Donk’s aggressive style and ability to create opportunities when there seems to be none have made him a player opponents have to constantly worry about. But what made his performance at the Esports World Cup even more important was the way he helped Spirit maintain their confidence after the difficult opening map. When the team needed someone to step forward, he was there. And when the pressure reached its highest point, Spirit had the players capable of handling it.

FUT Esports Came Close
While Team Spirit deserved the trophy, FUT Esports also deserves recognition for how far they pushed the champions. They won the opening map, forced Spirit into two overtime battles, and came incredibly close to turning the final into a completely different story. For a team that eventually finished second, the result will undoubtedly hurt. They were just one map away from becoming champions, but they also showed that they belong on the biggest stages of competitive Counter-Strike. Sometimes, coming second is not the end of the story. It can be the beginning of one.
The Champions of Paris
When the final round ended, Team Spirit had something that was almost taken away from them at the beginning of the night. The trophy was theirs. They had overcome the early setback, survived two overtime battles, and then completely controlled the final map. That is what makes this victory special. It wasn’t an easy road, nor was it a perfect final, and it certainly didn’t start the way Spirit wanted. But perhaps that is exactly why the victory means so much.
Team Spirit came to Paris looking for a championship, but they had to fight for every piece of it. They lost the first map, stood on the edge of going 0-2 down, and then found the strength to win three maps in a row. They didn’t just win the Esports World Cup. Instead, they fought their way to it, and that is the kind of victory that fans remember long after the trophy has been lifted.
