Ratan Naval Tata: The Jewel Of India

Ratan Naval Tata: The Jewel Of India

A Legacy Unparalleled

Ratan Tata died yesterday at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, signalling the end of a mighty era— an era decorated with principles, ethics, and morality—an era of giving, selflessness, and, of course, great vision. It is no wonder that India has been rendered poorer by the loss of Ratan Tata, who served as the chairman of the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy.

The True Visionary

A few months ago I read an article on India’s business tycoons and what separated Ratan Tata from the rest. The answer was simple, Ratan Tata was an industrialist while the others were businessmen. There was hardly an area in the life of the Indian population that went untouched by Tata’s vision. Brand TATA not only continued to espouse integrity, honesty, and ethics but became more relevant and focused during the tenure of Ratan Tata.

The Compassionate One

His compassion as an industrialist and a giver to society led to his dream project The Nano Car. He delivered what he promised with this project and ensured that a large section of the Indian population would own a car. Though the success of the Nano was shortlived due to market factors and strategies adopted to sell the car, the idea behind the project will always be respected in the history of the Automotive Industry in India. TATA’s dominance in the SUV segment and in particular amongst Electric Cars in India has to be credited to Ratan Tata’s foresight.

The Path-breaker

India’s growth and emergence as a Software  Development force in the world has to be attributed, amongst others to TCS, being a major exporter of Software. The acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover by Tata Motors and that of Corus by Tata Steel marked the foray of foreign acquisition by Indian Companies. This was a landmark achievement under the stewardship of Ratan Tata. Employment generation in the country was Ratan Tata’s focus area and though several companies, particularly in the IT sector were at times found laying off employees, it was never the case with the Tata Group. Staff well-being was always an uncompromising matter for Ratan Tata.

The Large Hearted  Philanthropist

A philanthropist of great merit, Ratan Tata gave a lot back to society through his concerted efforts in supporting education, medicine and rural development not only in India but across the world.

A Great Leader…RIP

With Ratan Tata’s death, we have lost a great industrialist, a great philanthropist, a great thinker, a great visionary, and truly a great leader. RIP !!
