Facing the Big Bad World
When I was 17, I was busy preparing for my Class XII board exams. The pressure was immense. A good percentage was essential to get admission in a decent Engineering College in Mumbai. The stakes were high, the competition was severe and thousands and thousands of other students too were burning the midnight oil to get into the rat race. My passion for sports had taken a complete back seat. I had not played anything for two years. The whole focus was to prepare myself to face the big bad world.
Lamine Yamal Barcelona’s Prodigal Son
This is exactly what most of the 17-year-olds do in the world unless you are Lamine Yamal. The teenage football sensation has made the world eat out of his hands with his sheer brilliance as a football player. Clubs are ready to empty their pockets for him. It is just Barcelona’s refusal to part with their prodigy that has kept the clubs at bay. His performance in the Euro Championships, held in Germany earlier this year was phenomenal. He was still a few days to 17 then, but played with great maturity unseen for a 16-year-old. Spain went on to beat England in the Final and were crowned Champions of Europe. Lamine Yamal had played a critical role in Spain’s success, which propelled him to such dizzying heights.

Born to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinea mother, Lamine was exceptional as a child. Barcelona had enrolled him in their school and there his football skills developed, very similar to that of the legendary Lionel Messi. Riding on his talent, Lamine debuted for the first team in his early teens and was very soon drafted into the National side.

Lamine Yamal ’s Exceptional Talent
Lamine’s ball control is magnificent. He reads the game well and is blessed with speed, a powerful left foot, and an amazing balance when with the ball. He has a low center of gravity, and a tough lower body which makes it difficult to pull him down and of course, apart from his classy skills in the mid-field, he can score as well. It is no surprise that Lamine Yamal will now don the iconic No. 10 jersey when he steps out to play for Spain next. His impact on Football has been amazing and the more people see him play, the more they are convinced that he is at the moment the player with the highest potential in the world.

His progress is so reminiscent of that of his Barcelona senior Lionel Messi, but only time will tell whether he will achieve immortality like the Argentinian legend. We all need to remember Lamine is just 17.
