Messi Triumph’s On Spain’s Day Out As England Bow Out

A Sunday of Finals

It was a dramatic Sunday, the 14th of July 2024 as Finals of three major sporting events took place in different parts of the World. The day started with the Men’s Singles Wimbledon Final between Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Novak Djokovic of Serbia in London. As the day progressed, a 1000 kms to the east of London, Spain locked horns with England in the Final of the Euro 2024 Championships in Berlin. And finally the day ended with the Copa America 2024 Final between defending Champions Argentina and Colombia at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, a good 8000 kms from Berlin. As none of the three events overlapped, the tennis and football fans were in for a delight and surely they were not disappointed.

Wimbledon: Carlos Alcaraz Brushes Novak Aside

The tide has turned decisively in favour of the next generation of tennis stars as Carlos Alcaraz defended his Wimbledon Crown with elan beating Novak Djokovic once again in the final of the most prestigious of Grand Slams. The score line read 6-2,6-2,7-6 in favour of Alcaraz. A straight sets demolition of once the invincible Serb. Alcaraz played some unbelievable tennis from the back of the court as Djokovic found it difficult to match the relentless ground strokes of Alcaraz. The Spaniard sped away quickly from Djokovic and though the Serb tried his best ( saved 3 match points too ), he was just unable to turn the tide in his favour. It was quick work from Alcaraz as Spain began celebrations in anticipation of a double delight later in the day.

Euro 2024 : Spain Reign Supreme as England Surrender

England were playing their second consecutive Euro Final. Without a silverware since Bobby Charlton’s side won the World Cup in 1966, the wait for an English victory in a major tournament had become an excruciating pain for the fans. On paper the English side, man to man as compared to Spain appeared better both in terms of experience and skill. Spain on the other hand were looking for a record 4th Euro Title and a resurgence of sorts in International Football. The two countries with the two best football leagues in the world had lots to play for and it was going to be a reverberating contest.

The match began and for the first 10 minutes England did not have  a feel of the ball. Spain were up and running, holding possession and pushing forward while England just watched. Spain were on the ascendancy right from the start of the match. From the first quarter onwards, England began to show some intent and purpose and a good contest ensued. However, the first half remained a cagey affair, but Spain were surely the better side.

Spain were dealt an injury blow, when the Player of the Tournament and Spain’s finest player Rodri was substituted mid-way due to an injury. This undoubtedly had weakened Spain. Rodri had been magical both in defence and in the midfield for his team and it was up to England to take advantage of his absence. But England remained surprisingly clueless at the start of the second-half while Spain pushed forward for goals. Eventually the deadlock was broken after a fine pass from  teenager Lamine Yamal from the centre to the fast approaching Nico Williams from the left. The young Nico with his first touch struck with utmost precision beating Pickford the English Goalkeeper to his left. Spain were ahead in the 47th minute. Nico Williams played brilliantly for Spain in the Finals exhibiting pace, skill and a tremendous temperament to ensure a cool finish.

England, jolted by the goal, began to show more energy in the field as time slipped by. Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham had had no impact on the game as Manager Gareth Southgate contemplated changes sooner than later. Cole Palmer, the in-form Chelsea striker replaced captain Harry Kane in the 70 th minute and produced a moment of individual brilliance  3 minutes later with a superb strike from outside the box to get England onto level terms. The strike was against the run of play and though England had equalised they still posed no threat to the opposition.

Undeterred by the equaliser Spain pressed on and again a Nico Williams cross from the left found Oyarzabal in the centre, who stretched his right leg to push the ball into the English Goal. Spain were ahead once again in the 86 th minute and deservedly so. England did pose some questions in the end, but Spain answered stoically and held on to the lead to emerge Champions of Europe for a record 4th time. Nico Williams was adjudged the Man of the Match for his sterling performance in the game.

Spain were by far the better  team and  England were strangely subdued. Manager Southgate’s strategies appeared laid back and could not inspire a team which had the requisite skill and potential to win the Championship. His resignation was imminent, and  so it happened.

Spain had another reason to rejoice on a day which will go down as a Red Letter Day in the Sporting History of Spain.

Copa America 2024 : Lautaro Martinez wins it for Messi

The Last Act was played out at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida which witnessed an unusual delay. There was crowd trouble at the entrance to the stadium. As pandemonium gripped, a threat to the start of the game loomed large. However the situation was brought under control and though delayed, the match began. A slugfest of sorts, with neither Argentina nor Columbia getting an upper hand. The match remained goalless and went into extra time. But there was drama unfolding with injury to Lionel Messi, who walked off the field and then cried on the bench.

Argentina have been true Champions with all bases covered. No wonder they have a fine team and eventually Lautaro Martinez produced a stunner to score in the 112 th minute and seal the Championship for Argentina who won a record breaking 16th Copa America Championship. Messi won his 3rd major trophy with his national team, winning 2 Copa Americas with the World Cup in between.

Messi lifted the Copa America as  a dramatic day of sporting excellence came to an end.
