An Unusual French Open
It has been an unusual French Open as the year’s second, and the only Grand Slam on clay is reaching the quarter-final stage. I have a strong inkling that a big churn is taking place, particularly in the Men’s category.
A Decisive Change Taking Place
The reigning champion, Carlos Alcaraz, is out injured. The favourite Jannik Sinner, beaten by the heat for good. And, the old warhorse Novak Djokovic, outclassed by a youngster 20 years his junior. Medvedev, Rublev, Casper Ruud, Bublik, and Alex de Minaur, all biting the dust; no wonder a change is beginning to enter a decisive phase in tennis.
No immediate threat to Sinner-Alcaraz, But A Brigade is Building Up
Not for a moment, however, I am suggesting any immediate threat to the bipolar hegemony of Alcaraz and Sinner, but certainly a brigade of exceptionally talented athletes is building up, which in the near future will be ready to launch an offensive against the duopoly of Sinner-Alcaraz.
Mensik, Jodar, and Fonseca Are Emerging
The brigade, in my opinion, will emerge with Jakub Mensik, the tall Czech. Rafael Jodar, the Spaniard. Dino Prizmic, the Croatian, Ben Shelton, the American, and last but not the least, the belligerent Brazilian, Joao Fonseca.
A Simmering Ambition
The above players, all in their teens or in their early 20s, have displayed an unwavering resolve, tremendous technique, extraordinary match awareness, an amazing repertoire of stroke play, which has simply stunned me, and, of course, some simmering ambition to beat the best in the world.
Joao Fonseca Has Beaten The Best on Clay
Joao Fonseca, in particular, beat Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud in an incredible display of tennis to go past two of the best players on clay. Fonseca also had beaten the young Prizmic in another epic 5-setter, before dismantling Novak and Ruud.
Mensik Has Got Past Accomplished Players
Jakub Mensik had the better of de Minaur and Rublev in tough battles, particularly with Rublev, who stood 15 places above Mensik. But the Czechian displayed great maturity and an unflinching resolve to get past Rublev.
A Churn Is Beginning To Unravel
The Churn is steadily happening, and I have no doubts that Fonseca and Mensik will pose a huge challenge to the top seeds in Tennis, not sparing even the highly accomplished and virtually invincible pair of Sinner and Alcaraz.
Zverev Will Not Have It Easy
Zverev, the no. 2 seed, will have to get past Jodar and the winner of the Fonseca-Mensik match to make it to the Final. In my opinion, this is a tough ask for Zverev, and he will have to dig deep to get past these youngsters, who are playing an absolutely fearless brand of Tennis.
The Churn is Real. The leaders watch out.
