Mo Salah, the pride of Egypt and Africa, the all-time highest non-European goal-scorer in the history of the English Premier League and one of the greatest players to have ever played for Liverpool, has vented out his frustration after being benched by Liverpool Manager Arne Slot for the last 3 games.
His emotional outburst has been construed by critics and commentators as inappropriate and avoidable. Salah mentioned that he had been made the scapegoat in a sudden drop in Liverpool’s form. The defending champions won their first 5 games in the EPL, but in the next 10 games, they lost 6, drew 2 and won 2, pushing them outside the top 5, with their title defence severely compromised.
Arne Slot came under severe criticism as his team began to flounder. There were several mistakes, particularly in the defence and midfield, and the new arrivals in Kerkez, Isak, and Florian Wirtz were unable to put any sort of imprint on the game. Some action had to be taken, and Arne Slot made his decision.
Slot, of all players, benched Salah for 3 games, winning 1 and drawing 2. A player who won the Golden Boot, the playmaker and the PFA’s player of the season, and played an enormous role in Liverpool’s EPL triumph last season, was miffed by Slot’s action. ” I have been thrown under the bus “, was his reaction and that someone in the Club just didn’t want him. He further added that he had earned his place since he arrived at Liverpool in 2017, and the present situation was not acceptable to him.
The tirade did not go down well with Football pundits. It appeared as if they had a chance to get back at Salah. No one is above the game and the club, they said, and that Salah’s rant had put the club in a spot and jeopardised his own future with Liverpool.
I agree that players can never be above the club. But they can never be treated as commodities. They are expected to be loyal but get pushed to the wrong side if they ask for loyalty in return from the Club.
Mo Salah is not like any other player. He is a legend of the English Premier League and Liverpool with several records in his name. He has not only won matches for his Club, but has won leagues and competitions for them. He has been a true entertainer with his sublime skills and has built a terrific relationship with the fans.
Mo Salah has excelled in his craft and has played with great heart, from which his Club has benefited big time. Football is a team sport, and therefore, no individual can claim indispensability, to which I agree. However, Salah still needed a bit more attention and a bit more care in dealing with his so-called poor performances this season.
His tirade against Liverpool and Slot goes to show the extent of the hurt the great man is suffering, and that he is not a commodity but a human being, after all.
