Phil Foden, one of England’s finest talents, but yet to unleash his full potential, showed why he is so highly rated with a massive England future.
Manchester City after a couple of losses, appeared to be taking a step back after an encouraging start to the season. The former EPL Champions and the most dominant side in England over the past decade, lost to Newcastle in the EPL last Saturday and then were beaten by Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.
Leeds United were the visitors this evening to the Etihad, a game which City had to win to keep the belief going. Phil Foden rose to the occasion. He started it and finished it too.
His fine volley with just a minute in the game saw City take an early lead over Leeds. Josko Gvardiol then made it 2-0 in favour of City in a goalmouth scramble in the 25th minute. At half-time, Pep Guardiola’s men were cruising, but football is unpredictable, and so Leeds proved it.
The visitors dominated the second half as City began to struggle. Leeds moved in, creating spaces and making City sweat. The tempo of the game had changed, and Leeds scored with Calvert-Lewin in the 49th minute and then with a penalty rebound from Nmecha to square up the match in the 68th minute. Gvardiol was the guilty party with a reckless tackle, which led to the penalty.
Leeds had the edge in the second half but Manchester City fought hard to avoid any further damage and make some moves of themselves. Eventually, a piece of magic from Phil Foden decided the match. A brilliant left footer from the edge of the box raced past a crowded Leeds defence to the right of the goalkeeper in no time. The placement was exquisite, the finish absolutely sublime.
Foden won it for Manchester City without a doubt. A much-needed win it was.
Leeds United had to bear the loss, their 4th straight one in the EPL.
