La Bombonera (Alberto Jose Armando Stadium), home to Argentina’s most famous Football Club, Boca Juniors, in Buenos Aires, was packed to capacity. Argentina were hosting their South American rivals Peru in an important World Cup 2026 Qualifier clash.
Argentina Had Lost To Paraguay 5 Days Ago
La Albiceleste were beaten 5 days ago by a resurgent Paraguay in Asunsion and were criticised for their performance. Back on their home turf, a comfortable win was expected from the white and light blue stripes. The expectations were high and Messi just had to deliver.

Messi Helps Break Shackles
The match turned out to be a cagey affair. Argentina, as usual dominated possession (74%) and did most of the attacking. Peru were extremely defensive, tightening the space around Messi and had kept his movements in check. The first half went goalless and the stand off was eventually broken in the 55th minute by quick move from Messi and a lovely pass to Lautaro Martinez.
Scintillating Martinez Puts Argentina Ahead
Lautaro Martinez has been in some exquisite scoring form for Argentina. The Inter Milan forward was brilliant again and scored one of the finest goals seen this year. The volley directed at him by Messi came at a slightly awkward height but Martinez produced an incredible kick with tremendous power, beating the Peruvian goalkeeper to his left with the smallest of margins. The precision on the strike by Martinez was simply flawless.

Argentina On the Verge of Qualification
Argentina fought hard and earned their victory, further consolidating their position at the top of the table. With this win, Argentina have all but ensured their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Messi Proved his Worth…Yet Again
Messi once again proved his worth and played the entire match. His presence on the pitch fuelled the excitement amongst the fans and served as a big source of inspiration for the team.
