The Seagulls Pull Off a Big Win at the Etihad

Brighton pulled off one of the results of the season at the Etihad, beating Manchester City 1-0 on Saturday. It leaves Enzo Maresca’s side with back-to-back Premier League defeats and gives Arsenal a clear opening at the top.

Yasin Ayari Deals A Killer Blow

The tone of the match was set early when Brighton struck in the 11th minute. Maxim De Cuyper capitalised on loose defensive play down City’s left flank, floating a cross back across goal for Yasin Ayari, who coolly turned it past Gianluigi Donnarumma to give the visitors a shock lead.

City Respond, But Brighton Defend Bravely

Stunned by the early goal, City dominated the ball with 61% possession and fired 19 shots to Brighton’s 7, but Brighton defended in numbers and blocked seven of those efforts. Bart Verbruggen was needed too, making six saves from City’s six shots on target.

Man City Fail to Equalise

Brighton were far from comfortable on the day. They picked up three yellow cards (20′, 49′ and 81′) and gave away 12 fouls, but that was the price of a disciplined, aggressive defensive performance. City, with 8 corners to Brighton’s 2, kept pressing late on and still could not find an equaliser.

A Statement Win For Brighton

This was a statement win for Brighton. It follows a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool last weekend, and it comes in a season where they have already beaten Arsenal 3-0 and Crystal Palace 5-0. They sit third on 19 points, just behind the top two.

A Bit of A Wobble for Maresca

City stay top on 21 points, but Arsenal are level with them having played one game fewer. Maresca’s first season in charge has had a strong start, but two straight defeats will raise questions about City’s cutting edge, because 19 shots and no goal is a worrying return for a side of their quality.

Verdict

Brighton: a brilliantly organised away performance and a real marker for their top-four ambitions. City: plenty of the ball, no finishing, and the title race is suddenly wide open.
