Cautiously, Yes

Cautiously, yes. Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday was their third straight league victory, and their first such run in 20 months. For a club that began the season badly, it is a real shift in mood, but the run still needs a tougher test before anyone calls it a revival.

From Winless to Winning

Spurs failed to win any of their first six league games this season, losing three and drawing three, including defeats by Brentford and Newcastle. Since then they have beaten Coventry 3-1, Chelsea 2-0 away and Palace 2-0, scoring seven and conceding one. The win at Chelsea was only their second there in 36 years, giving the run real weight. They now sit eighth on 12 points, out of the bottom half of the table for the first time in a long while.

What’s Working

Roberto De Zerbi’s side looks more solid and more organised. They have kept back-to-back clean sheets, and the defence has been both a source of goals and security. Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke scored against Palace, with van Hecke named Player of the Match. Sandro Tonali controlled the tempo in midfield. Teenager Luca Williams-Barnett also made his league debut, and De Zerbi said the mood around the club is now “totally different.”

The Caveats

The Palace win came against a team that played well over 80 minutes with 10 men after Jean-Philippe Mateta’s early red card. Spurs controlled it, with 79% possession and 28 shots to Palace’s two, but it was always going to be a routine job. Palace are 18th, and Coventry, Tottenham’s other win away from Chelsea, are 16th. Only the Chelsea result came against a top-four side.

What Comes Next

The schedule gets harder. Spurs visit Leeds on 7 November, then face Ipswich, Sunderland and Fulham before a home game against Arsenal on 6 December and a trip to Liverpool on 19 December. They are level on points with Bournemouth and Aston Villa, and four points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, so a strong November could put them in the European conversation.

Verdict

The improvement looks real. The defence is tighter, the confidence is back, and the Chelsea win was a statement. But the sample is small, and the soft opposition flattered the results. The matches against Leeds and Arsenal will show whether this is a turning point or just a good fortnight.
