Chelsea Record A Comfortable Win Against United

Chelsea turned a tight game into a comfortable win at Stamford Bridge, and Manchester United made it harder for themselves.

Morgan Rogers & Cole Palmer Punish An Indisciplined United

Both goals came in the second half: Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored at 50 and 64 minutes ( a penalty). Chelsea had 20 shots to United’s 10, with 10 on target to four, and 59% of the ball. Senne Lammens made eight saves to keep the score down. United were also undisciplined, with 20 fouls to Chelsea’s eight and a stream of bookings.

Martínez’s Red Card Turned A One-Goal Game Into A Lost Cause For United

With United 1-0 down to Rogers’ goal, Lisandro Martínez was booked for pulling Rogers’ shirt. He then jumped at a corner with a raised elbow and hit Wesley Fofana in the face, and the second yellow came in the 63rd minute after a video review, only four minutes after the first. Referee Peter Bankes initially didn’t penalise the challenge but was called to the monitor by VAR, and he awarded both a penalty and the second yellow. It was a very reckless challenge. Carrick refused to look at Martínez as he left the pitch.

A Rebound For Chelsea

For Chelsea, it’s a rebound from last week’s 2-0 home loss to Spurs. They’re on 16 points from nine games, with Sunderland away next on November 8.

A Blow For United & Carrick

For Michael Carrick, it’s another blow. He had been kept in charge for this match after a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth extended United’s winless run to eight games, leaving them one point above the relegation zone in 16th. Reports said the club would give him a chance to turn the form around. That run now stands at nine, and with the hierarchy already reported to have been weighing alternatives, pressure on him will only grow. Nothing official has been said about his future yet, but a decision might just be coming sooner rather than later.
