Palmeiras Take On Botafogo in FIFA Club World Cup
The FIFA Club World Cup has reached the knockout stages, with 16 clubs competing to advance to the Quarterfinals. The first round of 16 match, was held between two Brazilian Clubs, Palmeiras and Botafogo. Botafogo had edged out Palmeiras to win the domestic league last year and had also won the Copa Libertadores for the first time ever in 2024. It was going to be a tough Derby, and so it proved.
A Tough 90 Minutes As Palmeiras’ Abel Substitutes Willian
Palmeiras, from São Paulo, one of the greatest clubs in Brazil, coached by Abel Ferreira, took the pitch at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, boasting some terrific South American talent. And though the match was a gruelling battle, the 90 minutes went scoreless. The substitution of teenage sensation and Brazil’s future talisman Estevao Willian baffled many, but later proved to be an inspired change by Ferreira. Willian did show glimpses of his sublime skills, which have led him to Chelsea and will be playing once the English Premier League takes off in August this year.
It Was Paolinho’s Day As Palmeiras Emerge Victorious
It was to be substitute Paolinho’s day, the former Bayer Leverkusen striker, returning from injury, took a lovely ball from Richard Rios on the right flank, moved towards the Botafogo box with acres of space, and drilled a clean shot into the far corner. The stadium erupted. It was the 100th minute of the game, and the stadium dominated by Palmeiras’ Fans was up in raptures.
Botafogo Go Down Fighting
Botafogo fought hard to. They had beaten Paris St Germain in the league stages and had qualified above Spanish Giants Athletico Madrid, but Palmeiras held on and eventually won the Derby 1-0 to move into the quarter finals, where they will be met by a strong Chelsea who beat Benfica 4-1 to make it to the Quarters.
A fine game with loads of South American flair.
