Australia retained the Ashes 2023 after a 2-2 finish in the 5 Test Series. It was cricket played of the highest order amid some gripping drama as the two teams fought tooth and nail, exchanged blows and endured pain to subdue the other. The series was besieged with tantalising moments of which I have picked my 5, which shall remain etched in my memory and of several others for a long time to come.
5. The Emergence Of Khawaja

The Ashes 2023 has witnessed the emergence of Usman Khawaja as the lynchpin of Australia’s batting without a shadow of a doubt and was in no uncertain terms the player who sketched out their victory in the First Test in particular. His scores of 135 and 65 in the first Test and a hard-fought 75 in the second test were laced with patience and determination, holding the English at bay. His 496 runs in the series could well be classified as the most critical runs scored by Khawaja in his career. After years of hard work, throbbing struggle and a stop-start career, Usman Khawaja is eventually enjoying his time in the sun.
4. The Rains at Old Trafford
England had clawed back in the series at Headingley and were dominating the Old Trafford game. Zak Crawley blazed to a brilliant 189 and England put up a massive 592 in the first innings in reply to Australia’s 317. Many felt that the English batted a tad too long and with rains expected on the 4th and the 5th day, the English innings which was greatly entertaining, killed some vital time in the match. As was expected, the rains came down heavily and washed away half of the playing time. A century by a defiant Marnus Labuschagne too held the English back. But the rains it were which snatched away victory from the English. The weather eventually defining the series outcome in a way. The Aussies had held on to the Ashes yet again. 3. Woakes & Wood

Chris Woakes and Mark Wood played decisive roles in ensuring England drew the series 2-2. The fact that they entered the playing XI only after the first two tests which England lost, shows how impactful their presence was. They both bowled brilliantly and accounted for 33 Australian wickets in between them. Chris Woakes was magical when it came to swing and seam while Mark Wood generated tremendous pace and bowled with great hostility. The Aussie batters had a great challenge at hand and it has to be said that the Woakes and Wood combination scored over the Aussie batters. Chris Woakes snared 19 wickets in just 3 test matches and was adjudged the Man of the Series for England. It was Woakes & Wood who defined England’s comeback in the Ashes. 2. The Ball Change at the Oval
David Warner and Usman Khawaja had stitched a tremendous 140 runs opening partnership chasing a mammoth but gettable 384 runs to win the Final Test at the Oval. Absolutely nothing was happening for the English bowlers. Warner and Khawaja looked comfortable and were easily negotiating the English attack. An Australian victory was suddenly looking quite a possibility. But then came a hugely defining moment in the game. The English were pressing hard for a ball change with the Umpires and eventually their requests were answered in the affirmative. The ball was changed which literally changed the course of the game. The hard ball began to talk, seam, swing et all. A brilliant Chris Woakes removed Warner and Khawaja in quick succession and though the rest of the Australian batters tried to defy the English bowlers, they eventually succumbed to some good persistent bowling with the outgoing Stuart Broad claiming the last two wickets. It was an incredible series levelling match for the English and that ball change simply went in their favour.
1. Alex Carey’s Stumping Of Johnny Bairstow at Lord’s

The stumping of Johnny Bairstow by Alex Carey was easily the most controversial moment of the Ashes 2023. The incident made sparks fly from both sides with the Australians coming under a lot of hammer. The heat of the event did not spare even the Prime Ministers of both countries as they too joined in the arguments. Though the dismissal was within the rules, the intent of Alex Carey was the talking point. The Australians got an important wicket, but it spurred Ben Stokes and the English Cricket Fans no end. Ben Stokes played an innings to savour and with his sheer brilliance and belligerence almost secured a victory for his team. England did not look back after that incident and dominated Australia till the last match at the Oval, only being denied by the rain at Old Trafford. The cricket-loving public too stood strongly behind their team as never seen before. The Stumping, therefore, in my opinion, was the most defining moment of the Ashes 2023. Ashes 2023 was an unforgettable series. The play was tremendous and absolutely sublime. However, what raised the series was the participation of the spectators. They came in hordes and occupied the stadiums to their capacity in all the Test Matches. A great boost to Test Cricket indeed. Worth a wait for Ashes 2025, Down Under.
