Chausa : The Mango Historical

The Beautiful Mango

The bright yellow skin, with a tinge of red, and a bit of an oblong shape, the Chausa variety of Mango is indeed a visual delight. However, from the inside, it is a fruit beyond the ordinary and terming it delectable would be an understatement.

The Chausa with its fiberless, juicy ensemble is a voyage of exceptional sweetness, interspersed with an unexplainable zing and an aroma which transcends the consumer to a  plane of tangy ecstasy’.

The Happiness Spreading Variety

Come July and August, the Chausa reigns supreme bringing great happiness to Mango lovers like me across the country. To gorge on the Chausa just brightens my day and there was an impending urge from within me  of writing down an article on my favourite fruit. And hence I began to research on my subject, particularly the peculiarly sounding name ‘Chausa’.  And my findings were very interesting.

Chausa & Its Tryst With History

The name Chausa dates back to the year 1539 when Sher Shah Suri ( born Farid Khan ) got into an important military engagement with Humayun at Chausa ( a few kilometres from Buxar, in Bihar, bordering eastern Uttar Pradesh ). Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun on the 26th of June 1539 and celebrated with a feast of his favourite mango variety. So enamoured was Sher Shah Suri with the mango that he rechristened the variety ‘ Chausa ‘ to commemorate his victory and thus this exceptional variety got its name and a place in history. (And interestingly I had visited Chausa some 9 years ago, totally oblivious of this piece of factual past )

{The Chausa is majorly cultivated in Ghazipur ( the variety was also known as Ghazipuriya mango ), close to Buxar and also in Hardoi ( close to the Dussehri belt, Malihabad ), and is supplied across the country and beyond, mainly from these two centres.}

There are Health Benefits Too

Notwithstanding the exhilarating taste of the Chausa, its health benefits are immense too. Low in calories and fat , the Chausa is well  equipped with Vitamin A and C, and is recommended for boosting immunity, enhancing  vision health and digestion.
