A Dessert So Popular
Two ingredients, a simple dessert, exceedingly cherished, extensively consumed and the backdrop of an iconic tournament. Strawberries and Cream have become synonymous with the finely manicured lush green grass courts of Wimbledon and alongwith the tennis, this dessert is as much popular as the sport itself.
A Seamless Combination
Sports and Food combine seamlessly at Wimbledon and have been complementing each other so effectively since the year 1877, the year Wimbledon, one of the most prestigious Tennis Tournaments in the world was first held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon, London. June and July signal the arrival of summer and with it strawberries and Wimbledon.
King George V
The Legend goes that King George V, enjoyed strawberries while watching the games and introduced the same to the locals. Strawberries were then mixed with cream and it turned into a delicacy which to this day has held sway over the visitors coming to Wimbledon. The strawberries’ quality, variety and freshness have made it a must-have during the two weeks Tournament.

Staggering Numbers
As stated by Marion Regan, the third-generation farmer who has been supplying strawberries to Wimbledon some 31 miles away, 38 tonnes of strawberries are consumed during the annual tournament every year. The freshness and variety of the strawberries are the key and Regan has been ensuring the same for years. Strawberries are plucked very early in the morning and transported in refrigerated trucks to Wimbledon, where Perdita Sedov, the Head of Food & Beverage at the tournament, ensures the dessert is available till the gates close for the day. As per Sedov, 2.25 million strawberries were served at Wimbledon last year.
A True Legend
The sweet, superfresh strawberries and cream, with massive history and taste, are so sought after that Sedov and his team have to work non-stop to ensure meeting the daily demand. This simple dessert is the in thing at Wimbledon and is truly a legend in itself.
Try out strawberries and cream if you happen to be at Wimbledon next time.
