A New Season Begins
The English Premier League ( EPL ) 23-24 season took off on the 12th of August, with defending Champions Manchester City taking on Burnley in the season opener. As clinical as they were, ManCity eased passed Burnley at Turf Moor with a comfortable 3-0 victory with the usual Erling Haaland getting a brace.
The Magpies To Watch Out For
Arsenal, Brighton, and Fulham won their battles too, whilst a resurgent Brentford drew with Tottenham and so did Liverpool and Chelsea. However, the side which stole the show on Day 1 was Newcastle United who hammered Aston Villa 5-1. Newcastle is the team to watch out for. They came close to a top 3 finish last year and though the season has just begun, the Magpies look extremely good.
A New Kid on the Block
Beyond the big boys of the EPL, a new name on the table got my attention. The Luton Town Football Club, who have made it to the Premier League for the first time in 138 years of their existence and that too against all odds. Their story was fascinating and inspired me to write this post today.
The Hatters
Based in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, the club was founded in 1885. Nicknamed ‘The Hatters ‘ due to the historical association of Luton to the Hat-making trade, the football club has had its fair share of ups and downs, success and failures, so much so that it has been a hard, arduous grind, up to the Premier League.

The Hatters Celebrate
Battle Scarred Luton
They have had serious financial difficulties, faced relegation to the fourth division and were even suspended from league football for five years from 2008 to 2013. However, this did not deter the Hatters as they forged back into League football and since then have put up consistent performances, eventually making it to the Premier League for the 23-24 season.
An Evolving Story..much like Brentford
Managed by Rob Edwards since 2022, Luton has witnessed a good run of successful exploits. Though they were beaten 1-4 by a strong Brighton side in the first match of the EPL, they did show glimpses of what they are capable of. Luton‘s evolving story of grit and determination would be interesting to watch, similar to the one of Brentford when they debuted two seasons ago. Brentford have stayed the course and have improved big time as a team, worthy of playing in the English Premier League. A true inspiration for Luton.
Go Hatters Go !!

As a young kid I became familiar with ‘Luton’ when my late father bought a new english car named ‘ Vauxhall’ in 1951 which was manufactured in Luton England. Cars (and all their spare parts) in those days were imported and not manufactured in India. Unfortunately after some little time the car met with an accident and had to remain immobilised for around 3 months. This was because of the time it took the Car Company to arrange for the shipment of the spares from Luton , England to Lucknow, India. That’s another story anyway.
Riz Khan has thus stirred my memory and has written on the ascendancy of the ‘Luton’ football team and its emergence on the ‘big ‘ scene.
So ‘Luton’ it’s time to wish you make a name in this context also !
That’s really nostalgic.
