A Woods &  Woakesy Show

Ashes Alive

Desperate situations do not need desperate actions but cool, collected carefully thought-out reactions. England eventually got it right at Headingley and have kept the Ashes alive with two more matches to go.

Bazball Gone Astray

Under the stewardship of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England have been playing aggressive ruthless cricket, pulverising oppositions. In the Ashes series, England were expected to display the same brand of cricket ( nicknamed Bazball ), so they did. However, against a solid Australian attack and some dogged batting, the English often played some thoughtless, overconfident, careless cricket. Their bowling too appeared toothless and very soon the English were already 2-0 down with losses at Edgbaston and Lord’s. The Ashes was on the line when the teams reached Headingley.

Forced but Thoughtful Changes

With their backs to the wall, England were forced to make changes. Anderson and Josh Tongue made way for Chris Woakes and Mark Wood in the bowling department and in hindsight, it proved to be a great decision by the English Team Management.

Wood & Woakes Do It for England

Steaming Wood & Courageous Woakes

Mark Wood with his fiery pace unsettled the Australians no end. He came steaming in, bowling with a lot of purpose and intent. Chris Woakes too bowled beautifully with pace and healthy seam movement. The Aussies were surprised, to say the least and could not dominate with the bat in either of the innings. England were not great with the bat either, but lower-order contributions from Wood and  Woakes, plus a good knock from Harry Brook ( who had had a quiet Ashes so far ), proved crucial in the game’s eventual outcome. The extremely partisan Headingley crowd booed the Australians in good measure at every opportunity and cheered every run as England huffed and puffed to the victory target.

 A Slugfest

The Aussies though did not play badly, were simply surprised by a resurgent England team particularly buoyed by the inclusion of Wood and  Woakes, and appeared a bit jaded and not at their best. The series is now interestingly poised as it moves to Old Trafford, Manchester after a good 9-day rest for the players. It has been a gruelling, tormenting slugfest, with both teams fighting pitched battles in the centre. The upcoming matches can be expected to offer nothing dissimilar.

W & W Show

Of the 20 Australian wickets to fall, Wood and Woakes snared 13 of them. Their contribution was vital. They made their presence felt.  It was indeed a Woods and Woaksey show at Headingley, Leeds.
