The ‘Mission (im)Possible’ of Ethan ‘Tom Cruise‘ Hunt

The Immortals

John Rambo, Rocky Balboa, Mad Max, John Mclane etc are Reel life characters who have attained immortality. The actors who played these characters viz Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, and Bruce Willis have also etched out a special corner for themselves in the history of Hollywood Cinema. These characters won critical acclaim and enjoyed huge box-office success. In this elite list, however, there is one other character who along with critical appreciation has left all others behind with its out-of-the-ordinary content  and unparalleled commercial success. ‘ Ethan Hunt ‘ is the daredevil spy agent of the ‘Mission Impossible’ franchise.

An Incredible 27 years

Ethan Hunt has mesmerised audiences since 1996 and 27 years later, the much anticipated  7th instalment of Mission Impossible will arrive in a week. However, the question is, “Who has been breathing life in the character Ethan Hunt for the past 27 years and that too without a slip ? “. The answer is the amazing Tom Cruise, who has made every ‘Mission Impossible’ possible with his exceptional performances. The 61-year-old actor has defied the odds in making Mission Impossible an incredible visual treat every time.

A Prodigious Talent

Tom Cruise’s life was far from a smoothly cruising one. Suffering from Dyslexia, Tom Cruise spent his childhood in near poverty. Attended 15 schools in 14 years and had a tough relationship with his father. However, his very encouraging mother and grandfather backed him to the hilt so he could pursue his dreams and eventually realise them. His prodigious acting skills and sublime persona came as a breath of fresh air. Hollywood was soon celebrating their newfound ‘Star’.

Missionary Zeal

As Ethan Hunt in particular, Tom Cruise’s  Missionary Zeal to entertain his audience and to ensure the value of money each time they came to theatres has been the hallmark of the Mission Impossible franchise. He has left no stone unturned so far. He has pushed himself both physically and creatively to the limits each time and still has found something to keep improving.  Jumping off Cliffs, clinging onto aeroplanes, hanging from the Burj Khalifa, sprinting atop super fast trains and driving bikes over broken bridges are some of the death-defying stunts executed by Tom Cruise on his own to give immense credibility to Ethan Hunt.  No wonder, the films have performed exceptionally well at the Box Office each time.

An Edge of the Seat Affair

The ability to perform stunts which not only require physical fitness and training but also mental agility, speaks volumes about his professional work ethic and  unwavering commitment. Tom Cruise comes across as someone consumed by his art and by his passion to entertain. That is motivation in its purest form. The guy who made the Ray-Ban Aviator glasses an all-time craze with his Top Gun avatar will soon be seen in Mission Impossible 7: The Dead Reckoning- Part 1, which promises another Ethan Hunt special. So be  ready for an edge of the seat rendezvous, ‘made possible ‘ by Tom Cruise yet again.

I can hardly wait.
