Team Building Series

The Team Building Series has covered various facets of Team Building viz the formation of the team, the defining of objectives, roles and responsibilities, a well organised kickstart, managing the storming stage, the importance of trust, how to develop  trust, communication and cooperation and eventually putting the team on course to achieving targets. This brings us to the last of the articles on the Team Building Series. 

The Performance Stage

The Team eventually reaches the performance stage. A stage of accomplishments wherein  a team moves cohesively towards achievements of the defined goals. Assessment is an important activity of this stage. Evaluating team performance vis a vis set goals is critical for the attainment of the final destination. 

Assessing Team Progress

Clear and calibrated assessments are essential, which may involve  course corrections objective reasoning, honest feedbacks and candid discussions. These help in assessing and analysing performances better. Reinforcements in terms of skill, knowledge or guidance can still be made in this stage. Assessing performance therefore puts the team on the path of assured success. 

Celebrating Success

Team building is hardwork and therefore acknowledging   good work, particularly when and where its due, is of great importance. Timely rewards and Celebrating even small headways is a massive energy booster and a great motivator, inspiring teams for consistent and continued excellence.  

The Value of ‘ Time ‘

Another factor which has immense bearing on the success of a Team is ‘ Time ‘. For Team leaders and team developers time is of  great consideration. When to inspire a team, when to course correct, when to reign in a team, when to compliment a team with additional skills and resources, when to acknowledge good work and when to dismantle and assemble a fresh, are several such decisions which need to be taken in a timely manner. Ineffective teams are the ones where ‘ Time ‘ has been disrespected. ‘ Time ‘ therefore is a major influence in building successful teams.

Conclusion

Team Building is not ‘ A one time done all ‘ process. It has a circular trajectory, until the team is dissolved post the accomplishment of desired objectives. The various stages in the process are not sacrosanct and can be revisited during the course of the task at hand to rectify, reinforce and sometimes even re-do the several stages. The experience of team building will always throw up new learnings, which may even be documented as reference points for future teams. Team Building is an exciting process and will always test several skills of the team leader. Good leaders undoubtedly are excellent team builders and players.
