What if everyone in the world were born without a biological sex and had to grow into one during adolescence? That is the unusual premise behind Just Like Mona Lisa, an upcoming television anime that explores identity, relationships, and the pressure to make life-changing decisions.

The adaptation of Jun Yoshimura’s manga is scheduled to premiere in 2027. On October 21, 2026, the production team released its first main promotional video and key visual, introduced seven additional voice actors, and revealed an ending theme song by Japanese singer Imase.

What Is Just Like Mona Lisa About?

The story takes place in a fictional society where everyone is born without a biological sex. Around the age of 12, a person’s body begins changing towards male or female as their own preference develops, with that process generally settling by around 14. Hinase Arima reaches the age of 18 without undergoing that change. As the only person in their immediate social environment who remains without a biological sex, Hinase struggles with questions about identity and how others perceive them.

Despite this uncertainty, Hinase initially finds comfort in the familiar routine of spending time with childhood friends Ritsu Kaga and Shiori Takayama. Their relationship changes when both friends confess their feelings for Hinase. What seemed like an ordinary friendship becomes a complicated emotional situation, forcing Hinase to confront questions about love, identity, and the future. Rather than building its drama around supernatural battles or conventional romantic rivalry, the series uses its fictional setting to explore how social expectations influence personal decisions.

The seven additional cast members announced alongside the trailer are Yoshino Aoyama, Nobuhiko Okamoto, Daisuke Sakuma, Chiharu, Kakeru Hatano, Haruna Mikawa, and Shion Wakayama. Their individual character assignments have not all been disclosed in the announcement. Chika Anzai voices Hinase, the central character. The production team has also revealed character profiles and a new key visual featuring Hinase’s childhood friends and classmates.

Why Is Just Like Mona Lisa Worth Watching?

The series stands out because its central conflict is not simply about choosing between two romantic interests. Hinase must also confront the expectations of a society where most people follow a familiar biological path during adolescence. The fictional premise creates space for questions about belonging, self-understanding, and the pressure to define oneself for other people. These themes are handled through the characters’ relationships and their responses to change.

The original manga, published through Square Enix’s Gangan Online platform, has surpassed one million copies in circulation. The anime adaptation gives the story an opportunity to reach viewers who may not have encountered the manga.

For now, the production team has not confirmed an India-specific streaming platform or premiere date. More distribution details are likely to follow as the release approaches. With SHAFT producing the animation and Imase contributing the ending song, will Just Like Mona Lisa become one of 2027’s most memorable character-driven anime?
