The Darwin Incident (Darwin Jihen) is a science fiction social thriller about a being who is neither fully human nor fully animal. Its anime adaptation aired in early 2026. Here is what to know about the story, characters and why it sparks debate.
What Is the Story About?
An eco-terrorist group, the Animal Liberation Alliance, rescues a pregnant chimpanzee from a research lab. She gives birth to Charlie, a rare human-chimpanzee hybrid known as a “humanzee.” Raised by adoptive human parents, Charlie develops abilities beyond those of either species. At 15 he starts high school and befriends a classmate named Lucy Eldred. Meanwhile, the Alliance has become more extreme and wants to draw Charlie into its plans.
Why the Story Is Controversial
The series deliberately blurs the line between humans and animals. Charlie has no legal protection under either human rights or animal rights, because he is technically neither. Creator Shun Umezawa has described the story as a thought experiment about how people would react if a being like Charlie existed. Those questions about law, prejudice and activism make it uncomfortable by design.
Main Characters
- Charlie, the humanzee, voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki.
- Lucy Eldred, Charlie’s first friend at school.
- Gilbert and Hannah Stein, Charlie’s adoptive parents.
- The Animal Liberation Alliance, the group that wants to use Charlie.

The anime premiered on January 7, 2026 on TV Tokyo and aired through April, with 13 episodes. Bellnox Films produced it, with Naokatsu Tsuda directing and Katsuichi Nakayama as series director. Official HIGE DANDism performed the opening theme, “Make Me Wonder.” Prime Video streamed it in Japan, and international availability varies by region.
