As of October 8, 2026, Vinland Saga Season 3 has no official release date or production announcement. Here is the latest renewal status, Yukimura’s comments, rumors, and possible story.
As of October 8, 2026, Vinland Saga Season 3 has not been officially announced with a release date or confirmed production details. That has not stopped rumors from spreading, particularly after several reports claimed the third season was already in production. Creator Makoto Yukimura addressed those claims in January 2026, saying the information had not reached him and that he hoped the rumors would prove true.
The situation is therefore more complicated than a simple “Season 3 is cancelled” or “Season 3 is confirmed” headline. The anime has more manga material available, the original story is now complete, and there have been indications that another season is desired. However, there has been no public confirmation from the production side that Season 3 has received a formal announcement.

Is Vinland Saga Season 3 Officially Confirmed?
No. As of October 8, 2026, there is no public official announcement confirming a third season, its release date, episode count, or returning animation studio. Recent tracking of the series continues to list Season 3 as unannounced. That means social media posts describing Season 3 as officially confirmed or already in production should not be treated as established fact.
What Did Makoto Yukimura Say About Season 3?
The latest major clarification came in January 2026 after rumors claimed that Season 3 was already being produced. Yukimura acknowledged that he had seen the reports but said the information about production had not reached him. He also expressed hope that the rumors were true, rather than announcing that the season had been officially approved.
The confusion partly came from an older French interview in which the anime’s next season was described as being “in preparation.” That statement dates back to 2025 and does not constitute a new 2026 production announcement. Later reports also noted that the wording had been interpreted online as a confirmation that active production was already underway. So the distinction is important: there has been evidence of preparation or interest, but no current public confirmation of an active Season 3 production.

Has Vinland Saga Been Cancelled?
No cancellation has been announced either. The anime’s second season ended in June 2023, and the absence of a third-season announcement more than three years later has naturally led to speculation. However, a long production gap is not the same thing as an official cancellation. There is also a major reason for continued fan interest: the source manga is now complete. Makoto Yukimura concluded Vinland Saga with Chapter 220 in July 2025 after roughly 20 years of serialization. That means the anime no longer faces the problem of catching up with an unfinished manga.
What Would Vinland Saga Season 3 Adapt?
The most likely continuation is the Eastern Expedition Arc, which begins around Chapter 100 and runs through Chapter 166. Season 2 already adapted the vast majority of the Slave Arc before its finale briefly moved into the beginning of the next section of the manga. The Eastern Expedition Arc would therefore be the natural starting point for a third season.
The arc follows Thorfinn and Einar as they pursue their plans for Vinland and travel east in search of the resources needed for their journey. It also introduces important characters, including Hild, and expands the story beyond the events covered by the first two seasons. That makes the Eastern Expedition Arc a strong candidate for Season 3, but it is not an officially announced Season 3 adaptation plan.

Will MAPPA Return for Season 3?
That remains unconfirmed. MAPPA produced Season 2 after WIT Studio handled the first season, but there has been no official Season 3 announcement naming MAPPA as the returning studio. Claims that MAPPA is definitely producing the next season therefore go beyond what has been publicly confirmed. The same applies to any claimed release year. A 2027 premiere has been discussed as a possibility in fan and media speculation, but there is no confirmed release window.
When Could Vinland Saga Season 3 Be Announced?
There is currently no confirmed announcement date. The completed manga gives a future production team enough material to continue the story, while the popularity of the existing anime keeps interest in another season high. Those are reasons for optimism, not evidence that an announcement is imminent.
For now, the confirmed position is simple: Vinland Saga Season 3 has not been officially announced, it has not been officially cancelled, and no release date or studio has been confirmed. The Eastern Expedition Arc is the obvious source material for a continuation, while claims that production is already underway remain unverified. Would you watch Vinland Saga Season 3 immediately if MAPPA officially announced it?
