Retirement Thoughts Do Not Enter His Mind
Rohit Sharma has shared his thoughts on what lies ahead as the 2027 ODI World Cup gets closer. Speaking to JioStar before India’s ODI series against the West Indies, he made one thing very clear. The idea that his career is finished will never cross his mind while he is still playing. He said that as long as you are playing, there is always something to look forward to.
The World Cup Is His Motivation
Rohit tied his motivation directly to the tournament ahead. He said he is looking forward to the World Cup and to what lies ahead for him. He also explained why ICC events are different from bilateral series. When a World Cup is played, the challenges are unique. You face different opponents and play at different venues. That means you have to prepare differently and think in a different way. That challenge is what drives him.
Unlike Kohli, Rohit Does Not Name 2027 as His Last Tournament
Rohit’s comments came around the same time as Virat Kohli’s. Kohli confirmed that 2027 will be his last World Cup for India. Rohit’s answer covered similar ground but ended in a different place. He did not say that 2027 would be his final tournament. His words were about motivation, not an exit plan. The phrase “unfinished business” fits someone who is still chasing something, not someone counting down to a farewell.

Both Players Have Retired from Tests and T20Is
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have already retired from Tests and T20Is. Only ODIs remain for them. Both are building towards the same tournament in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia next October. For Rohit, the ODI World Cup is the one major trophy he has never won. He has won the T20 World Cup twice, in 2007 and 2024. But he has never lifted the ODI trophy. He came closest as captain in 2023, when India reached the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium before losing to Australia.
The Road to 2027
India’s path to the 2027 World Cup already has some shape. A series against New Zealand will follow the West Indies fixtures. A Zimbabwe series is scheduled for early 2027 as final preparation. Whether Rohit Sharma plays beyond that tournament remains genuinely open. He is not thinking about the end. He is thinking about the next challenge. And for him, that challenge is the 2027 ODI World Cup.
