A Dream Debut in Thiruvananthapuram
Naman Dhir became India’s latest ODI debutant on Sunday. The Punjab all-rounder was handed his first international cap just before the first ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. Captain Shubman Gill presented the cap to Dhir at the team huddle. Dhir earned his maiden India call-up after a series of strong performances for his state team, franchise leagues, and India A.
Why He Was Picked for the Playing XI
Dhir’s inclusion came after premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya missed the series due to injury. With Nitish Kumar Reddy not fit to bowl a full quota of 10 overs, Dhir was given a spot in the playing XI. Captain Shubman Gill said at the toss that the team was going with four bowlers and two all-rounders in Reddy and Naman, who was making his debut. With Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav already in the side, Dhir gives India the option of a third spinner. Prasidh Krishna led the pace attack, with Gurnoor Brar in company. Reddy filled the third seamer’s role.
Who Is Naman Dhir?
The right-hander first came into the spotlight during his time with Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Batting at number six or seven, Dhir’s ability to hit long boundaries, along with his part-time off-spin, made him a talent to watch. His knock of 62 runs off just 28 deliveries against the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024 during Mumbai Indians’ final league game established him as one of the most dangerous power-hitters in the game. Since then, Dhir has not looked back and earned opportunities for India A in 2025.
His Remarkable Run in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League
His maiden India call-up was also a reward for his blistering show with the bat during the recently concluded Sher-E-Punjab T20 League 2026. Playing for Amritsar Soormas, Dhir amassed 655 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 217.6. During the tournament, he scored two hundred and three fifty-plus scores.
His best was 173 runs off 64 balls against the Mohali Kings. With the ball, Dhir also took seven wickets. Notably, he took over the captaincy after regular skipper Abhishek Sharma went for national duty and led his team to the trophy. It was just eight days after his 173-run knock that Dhir received his maiden India call-up.
His Domestic Record So Far
For Punjab, Dhir has played 20 first-class games. He has scored 669 runs and taken 17 wickets. He has also played 14 List-A games, with 351 runs and seven wickets to his name. These numbers show that he is a genuine all-rounder who can contribute with both bat and ball.
The Playing XI for the First ODI
India’s playing XI for the first ODI included Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill as captain, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul as wicketkeeper, Naman Dhir, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Gurnoor Brar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Prasidh Krishna.
The West Indies fielded John Campbell, Justin Greaves, Keacy Carty, and Shai Hope as wicketkeeper and captain, and Amir Jangoo, Jewel Andrew, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Gudakesh Motie, Alzarri Joseph, and Jayden Seales.
What This Means for Indian Cricket
His debut is another example of India’s growing bench strength. He has earned his opportunity through consistent performances in domestic cricket and franchise leagues. His ability to hit big shots and bowl part-time off-spin makes him a valuable asset in the middle order. With Hardik Pandya out due to injury, Dhir has a chance to make a strong impression. If he performs well, he could become a regular part of India’s white-ball setup. For now, he will be focused on making the most of his opportunity in the series against the West Indies.
