For years, the Netherlands carried one painful memory whenever Germany entered the conversation. The 1974 World Cup final had ended with Dutch dreams collapsing on German soil. Fourteen years later, Marco van Basten finally gave an entire nation its revenge. The stage was the 1988 European Championship semi-final in Hamburg. Two minutes before the end, he ran across Jürgen Kohler and met a searching pass from Jan Wouters. Van Basten had actually started the tournament on the bench against the Soviet Union after struggling with an ankle injury during his debut season at AC Milan. Once given his opportunity, everything changed. He scored a hat trick against England in the next match, then scored the late winner against West Germany. That gave him four goals before the final, where he produced another unforgettable moment against the Soviet Union.
Van Basten controlled Arnold Muhren’s crossfield ball from a seemingly impossible position before striking a spectacular volley over Rinat Dasaev and inside the far post. It became one of the most famous goals in European Championship history. The Netherlands won 2-0; Van Basten finished with five goals and claimed the tournament’s Golden Boot.

What Did That Tournament Mean For Van Basten?
The 1988 European Championship transformed Van Basten from a promising striker into one of the biggest stars in world football. He would eventually win three Ballon d’Or awards and become one of AC Milan’s greatest players, helping the Italian club win two European Champion Clubs’ Cups. His international career ended with 58 caps and 24 goals, although recurring ankle problems eventually forced him into an extremely premature retirement.
