Tom Aspinall has announced that he has vacated his UFC heavyweight title as he continues to struggle with ongoing eye complications. The 33-year-old revealed the decision in a statement posted on Instagram, explaining that he cannot get medically cleared to fight right now. It has been nearly 11 months since his first title defense against Ciryl Gane ended in a no-contest after he was poked in both eyes and was unable to continue late in the first round. Despite undergoing multiple eye injuries since then, he remains unable to get cleared to compete again.

Aspinall wrote that anything read in the media is simply noise and that people are creating their own narratives. He wanted to share the truth. He said ongoing complications with his eyes mean he cannot get medically cleared to fight right now. He has had multiple surgeries, accidents, and infections and has done everything possible to get back to competing. He had previously agreed to a fight date and was back sparring, feeling great and ready to compete, when an accident caused further damage to his right eye. This means more time away from the sport, and right now, the timing of his return is unclear.

Why He Has Been Quiet

Aspinall acknowledged that there have been questions about why he has been quiet. He explained that he has always followed the advice of the UFC and focused on his recovery while they tried to make his return happen. He has now made the decision to vacate the heavyweight title. He asked the UFC to allow him to make this statement because he does not want to hold up the heavyweight division. He knows what it is like to have your career put on hold and wants other fighters to have the opportunity to compete for the title.

Tom Aspinall stated that the UFC and Hunter have been informed every step of the way and have seen the tests, procedures, and medical information relating to his eyes. They have worked closely with different doctors and specialists to try and make his return happen, but unfortunately, it is simply not possible right now.

Aspinall said he is absolutely gutted. He has chased this dream since he was 10 years old. However, he made it clear that he is not done. Aspinall noted that what makes this particularly difficult is that many of the complications he is dealing with are a result of fouls that changed the course of his career. He said fighters rely on officials to enforce the rules and protect them in those moments, and it is hard to still be dealing with the consequences today. He thanked everyone who has supported him throughout what he called an absolute nightmare and said he will be back as soon as he is medically able to be.
