Conor McGregor of Ireland looks on prior to facing Max Holloway

Aldo Backs McGregor’s Return

Jose Aldo has offered support to Conor McGregor, his former rival. Aldo believes McGregor can still make an impact in the UFC lightweight division and could even fight for the title again. The two fighters had a heated rivalry before their 2015 title fight. McGregor won that fight by knockout in just 13 seconds. That loss ended Aldo’s 18-fight winning streak, which had lasted nearly a decade. McGregor often mocked Aldo before the fight. But Aldo says he no longer holds any bad feelings toward McGregor. He wants him to return and have great fights again.

McGregor’s Injury and Return Timeline

McGregor injured his knee in the opening seconds of his rematch against Max Holloway in July. That fight marked the end of a five-year break from the Octagon. He damaged his ACL and meniscus. He had surgery in August. McGregor is now targeting a return in the summer of 2027. That would be the final fight on his current UFC contract.

Aldo’s Advice: Return to Lightweight

Aldo believes McGregor should return to the lightweight division rather than competing at welterweight. He said McGregor needs to go through some dietary re-education to see if he can get back down and be lighter again. In Aldo’s opinion, McGregor has the frame for 155 pounds, so it would be good for him. Aldo also thinks McGregor could quickly get into title contention if he beats a notable opponent.

The Lightweight Division Is Wide Open

Aldo said that if McGregor fights at 155 pounds and beats a name, the division is wide open again. He feels the division has stalled. He pointed out that Ilia Topuria moved up and lost to Justin Gaethje. That has left things a bit messy. Aldo believes anyone can come in and snatch the title. That is why he thinks McGregor has a chance to make a big impact if he returns at lightweight.

Aldo Wishes McGregor Well

Aldo said he always hopes for the best. He hopes McGregor is doing well physically and psychologically. He wants him to return to the UFC and have great fights again. The comments show that the old rivalry has cooled over the years. Aldo is now offering encouragement instead of criticism. For McGregor, that support from a former rival could be a boost as he works toward his comeback.
