Shoaib Akhtar holds the official record for the fastest delivery ever bowled in international cricket. He achieved this milestone on February 22, 2003, during a World Cup match against England at Newlands in Cape Town. His record speed of 161.3 km/h came on the last ball of his second over. The average speed of that over was an astonishing 158.06 km/h. He had previously recorded 161.0 km/h in April 2002.
Akhtar made history by becoming the first bowler to officially break the 100 mph barrier in international cricket. He later revealed that he knew he was going to break the record and had told his coach before the match. His delivery is officially recognised by the Guinness World Records as the highest electronically measured speed for a ball bowled by any bowler. The Rawalpindi Express remains the fastest of them all.
2. Shaun Tait – The Australian Speedster
Shaun Tait was renowned for his raw blistering pace and distinctive slinging action. He bowled his fastest delivery at 161.1 km/h against England at Lord’s Cricket Ground in 2010. That delivery was clocked at 100.1 mph by the radar gun. Tait’s record remains the fastest ever recorded ball by an Australian bowler.
He had previously clocked 160.7 km/h at the MCG on February 5, 2010. That was the fastest delivery recorded in Australia at the time. He also expressed his ambition to break Shoaib Akhtar’s world record. However, there was some debate over the ball’s pace. Cricinfo reported the same delivery at 97 mph, which is 156.1 km/h. Despite the controversy, Tait remains one of the fastest bowlers in cricket history.

3. Brett Lee – The Fearless Express
Brett Lee was one of the most feared fast bowlers of his generation. He was known for his relentless aggression and ability to maintain extreme pace throughout his career. Jeff Thomson was one of the most terrifying fast bowlers of the 1970s. His slinging action and extreme pace made him a nightmare for batsmen around the world. He was clocked at 160.6 km/h during a Test match against the West Indies in Perth in 1975. The speeds were measured using very accurate high-speed cameras at the WACA ground.
Thomson was subsequently measured for speeds in 1976 and clocked even higher. His delivery remains the fourth fastest recorded in cricket history. His fastest delivery was recorded at 160.4 km/h during a Test match against New Zealand in Perth in 2015. The delivery was a searing yorker to Ross Taylor. It fell just short of the 100-mile mark, with the conversion leaving it at 99.667939 mph.
