Indian cricketers are not allowed to play in overseas T20 leagues. This is a long-standing policy of the BCCI. The decision was made to protect Indian cricket’s interests.

Around 2010, Cricket Australia wanted Indian players in the Big Bash League. They believed having Indian stars would boost the league’s popularity. However, the BCCI realized that allowing Indian players to play abroad would mean more eyeballs for overseas leagues. It could also increase the media rights value of those leagues. The BCCI saw this as a threat to the IPL.

The IPL is the biggest and richest T20 league in the world. It attracts top players and major sponsors. If Indian players played in other leagues, the IPL’s primacy could be affected. Other leagues would gain more attention and value. The BCCI wanted to prevent this.

The total purse in most overseas leagues is much smaller than what Indian players earn in the IPL. For top players, foreign leagues are not financially attractive. Second or third-rung players may get berths but may not get opportunities to play. This defeats the purpose of allowing them to participate.

Another key reason is protecting domestic cricket. Rahul Dravid has said that allowing players to play in overseas leagues would weaken the Ranji Trophy. The domestic season is the feeder system for Indian cricket. If players are away playing in foreign leagues, domestic cricket would suffer. Test cricket could also be affected.

The BCCI also wanted to protect players from over-exposure and injuries. The policy was introduced when workload management was not a major focus. The board felt that allowing players to play in multiple leagues would increase the risk of injuries and burnout.

Most foreign leagues clash with India’s domestic season. The BCCI conducts over 2,500 domestic games each season. Even top players often skip domestic matches. If second-tier players also started playing abroad, the domestic system would collapse.

Ravi Shastri Also Urged BCCI to Allow Indian Players in Overseas T20 Leagues

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri urged the BCCI to allow active Indian cricketers to play in overseas T20 leagues. He believes such exposure would help young players improve their skills and gain experience in different conditions.

Shastri said India produces a huge pool of talented cricketers. Not everyone gets an opportunity to play at the top level. He questioned why a player with only a C or D grade contract or someone not on the Test side should be stopped from playing in leagues like the Big Bash. He said the experience would be an education in every sense. Players would learn different training methods and pick up techniques that could help them when they return to domestic or IPL cricket.

At present, the BCCI allows only retired male players to play in foreign T20 leagues. Active players need a No Objection Certificate to participate. This has limited their involvement in tournaments like the BBL. In contrast, Indian women have regularly played in overseas competitions such as the BBL and The Hundred.

Ravichandran Ashwin became the first prominent Indian male cricketer to feature in the Big Bash. He joined Sydney Thunder for the full season after retiring from international cricket. Shastri sees this as a step that could eventually allow younger talents to gain international exposure. He believes opening the doors for more Indians to play abroad could have a positive ripple effect.

How Vijay Shankar Leaving Could Change Overseas Rules

Vijay Shankar’s retirement may have pushed the BCCI to consider a new policy regarding players who take part in foreign leagues. Shankar retired from domestic cricket and the IPL on May 22. Just four days later, on May 26, he joined the Kandy Royals for the 2026 Lanka Premier League.

During an Apex Council meeting, BCCI officials discussed putting a five-year ban in place for players who want to return to Indian cricket after playing in foreign leagues. The proposal is still under discussion. The timing suggests BCCI is looking to plug a loophole.

BCCI is the only cricket board that does not allow active players to play in foreign leagues. An Indian player must retire from competitive cricket, including the IPL, to play abroad. Several players like Dinesh Karthik, Yuvraj Singh, and Irfan Pathan have taken this route in the past.

BCCI wants to maintain the exclusivity of the IPL. They also want to retain top talent for domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. These tournaments are the breeding ground for India’s future players.

By bringing a five-year bar, BCCI aims to send a message to players. They want to discourage players from taking early retirement just to play in foreign leagues. A BCCI official said the idea is to make players be sure of their decision before retiring.

The policy change has been delayed due to a lack of proper legal backing. Once the items are reviewed, a change can be expected soon.
