Khabib Nurmagomedov retired from MMA with a perfect 29-0 record. Over his career, he faced many tough fighters. But when asked about his hardest fight, he has given different answers at different times. Three names come up most often: Justin Gaethje, Gleison Tibau, and Conor McGregor. Each one tested Khabib in a different way.

Justin Gaethje – The Toughest Overall Test

Khabib has clearly called Justin Gaethje his toughest opponent. They fought at UFC 254 in October 2020, which turned out to be Khabib’s last fight before retirement.

This fight was incredibly difficult for several reasons. First, Khabib’s father and lifelong coach, Abdulmanap, had passed away due to COVID-19 complications just months before. Khabib trained for this fight without his father for the first time in his career. The emotional weight was huge. Second, Khabib entered the fight with multiple injuries and was not at his best physically. Third, Gaethje’s strikes were extremely powerful. Khabib later described it as feeling like being hit by a truck.

Despite all these challenges, Khabib Nurmagomedov still managed to submit Gaethje with a triangle choke in the second round. After the fight, he retired from MMA, keeping a promise he had made to his mother.

Gleison Tibau – The Toughest Physical Test

Khabib has also called Gleison Tibau his toughest opponent in terms of pure physicality. This fight took place in July 2012 and was only Khabib’s second bout in the UFC.

What made this fight so hard was that Tibau completely neutralized Khabib’s wrestling. Khabib attempted 13 takedowns during the fight, and every single one of them failed. This was the only time in his career that he was completely shut down in the wrestling department. The fight was extremely close and went to a decision. Although Khabib won by unanimous decision, it was very controversial. Tibau actually landed more significant strikes, with 46 compared to Khabib’s 33. Many observers, including commentator Joe Rogan, felt that Tibau deserved the win. Several unofficial media scorecards also scored the fight in Tibau’s favor.

Conor McGregor – The Toughest Mental Test

Khabib has admitted that Conor McGregor was his toughest opponent mentally and psychologically. Their fight at UFC 229 in 2018 was one of the biggest events in UFC history.

The rivalry between the two went far beyond sport. McGregor attacked Khabib’s family, religion, and culture. This caused immense emotional and psychological pressure on Khabib. The media coverage was massive, and the whole world was watching. Despite all this pressure, Khabib stayed focused and dominated the fight. He submitted McGregor in the fourth round, proving that he could handle both the physical and mental challenges.

The Final Verdict

Khabib faced different kinds of challenges throughout his career. Justin Gaethje gave him the toughest overall fight due to the emotional and physical circumstances. Gleison Tibau was the hardest physical test because he stopped Khabib’s wrestling completely. And Conor McGregor was the biggest mental challenge because of the personal nature of the rivalry. Each opponent pushed Khabib Nurmagomedov in a unique way, and overcoming all of them is what made his undefeated record so remarkable.
