Hull City Beat Manchester United

In Football, Underdogs Get Their Due

Football is a Sport where reputations do not matter, where past performances are irrelevant, where the stars do not always shine, where the underdog gets its due and where only the present matters. The Tigers from Hull City were in the mood to hunt and they got their prey.

Manchester United Were The Favourites

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United, this calendar year, was the most successful side statistically in the Premier League and it was logical to guess that United were gunning for the Title this season. Hull City had made a dramatic entry into the Premier League, and though the Tigers were hosting United at their home ground, the visitors were well and truly the favourites to begin with a bang.

But Hull City Drew First Blood Through Semi Ajayi…

But then the vagaries of sport cannot be taken lightly, and Manchester United paid heavily for underestimating a team which was brave and determined to win. The MKM Stadium was packed to the rafters as the Tigers went ahead in the 17th minute through Nigerian Semi Ajayi in a goalmouth scramble, sending the crowd into raptures.

… With Nobel Mendy Doubling The Lead Shortly After

Nobel Mendy, the Senegalese, then sent the stadium into an absolute pandemonium when he directed a fine free-kick past Lammens to double up the lead. United were stunned by the second goal and, though they carried the ball mostly, were clueless at times.

A Gritty Hull Defence Denied A Clueless United Team

Matheus Cunha, Mbeumo and Dorgu had a few chances, but a gritty Hull defence ensured that United struggled to score. Yuri Tielemans, on his debut for United, didn’t inspire confidence, and though Carrick brought in Rashford and Sesko, the favourites were unable to score. Tzolakis, Hull’s goalkeeper, had a great game too.

Hull City Win To Shock Carrick No End

Hull City denied Manchester United and succeeded in winning their first game after a return to the Premier League. Michael Carrick appeared a bit shocked. He had not expected this to happen.
