The Storm Called Cape Verde
Cape Verde have taken this World Cup by storm, and their performance last night in Miami against Uruguay, in an exciting Group H clash, was one to savour.
An Incredible Pina Goal
For me, the goal of the tournament so far was struck by Kevin Pina, the sprightly Cape Verde midfielder. His strike of a free-kick from miles outside the box ( must be beyond 25m ) just sped over the turf like lightning and on the bounce beat Uruguay’s highly experienced Goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera, to his left. It was sensational from Pina. He had power and precision all bundled into a rocket of a shot. Cape Verde had taken the lead.
Uruguay Strike Twice To Take Lead
Uruguay, rattled by the Pina blow, laid siege on the Cape Verde goal and, despite the presence of Vozinha, scored twice in 7 minutes just at the stroke of halftime to take a precious lead over Cape Verde. Both goals were the result of some incredible play from the South Americans. Araujo and Canobbio were on target as Uruguay showed their class too.
But Cape Verdeans Equalise…
The Cape Verdeans, however, were not to be undone and scored through Varela after a misjudgement from the 40-year-old Muslera. The goalkeeper left his goal vacant and paid the price. The debutants had equalised in the 61st minute.
… And Hold Fort To Force A 2-2 Draw
Uruguay then went for the jugular and kept on attacking Cape Verde, who absorbed everything like a cushion. The South Americans came close to scoring, but somehow the Cape Verdeans managed to keep the ball out. Uruguay kept on missing and eventually had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
The Debutants Have A Great Chance Of Progressing in the World Cup
Cape Verde remained unbeaten and will face Saudi Arabia next, with a good chance of making it to the Round of 32.
With Spain Next, It is Much Tougher For Uruguay
For Uruguay, they will have to contest against a resurgent Spain and will need a draw at least to have any chance of qualifying for the next stage.
