Day 5: Football Rising
It was yet another fascinating day at the FIFA World Cup, with the quality of football rising by the day. The goals were spectacular, and the saves even better.
Cape Verde’s Big Spanish Test
Cape Verde were facing a big test. The Spaniards, one of the favourites to win this year, had the first timers in their range and were itching to deliver a solid punch in Group H at the Atlanta Stadium.
Spain Denied By A Belligerent Team Cape Verde
Team Cape Verde, however, turned out to be more than mere contestants. The Cape Verdeans blocked Spain with brilliant man-to-man marking, put their bodies on the line, and defended valiantly through some incredible goalkeeping from the 40-year-old Vozinha.
Spain Did Not Impress
Spain, on the other hand, were a bit unlucky at times with Ferran Torres hitting the crossbar, but the Spaniards didn’t impress. Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Nico Williams were introduced late into the match because of injury concerns, but they too could not break the deadlock.
A Moral Victory For Cape Verde
It was a moral victory for Cape Verde as the Africans scored a point in their very first World Cup game.
Belgium vs Egypt: A Critical Group G Clash
Belgium against Egypt was a big match in Group G in Seattle. Though Belgium had the edge with some sharp performances in their preparations up to the World Cup, Egypt were no easy meat, and so it turned out.
Ashour Scores A Brilliant One From A Mo Salah Assist
Mo Salah, celebrating his birthday, sent out a brilliant pass to Emam Ashour, who struck a screamer past Courtois to put the Pharaohs ahead in the 20th minute. The finish from Ashour was sensational.
Belgium Were Denied, But Egypt Missed Too
Belgium went on the offensive, but were thwarted by an extremely organised Egyptian defence. In the interim, Egypt kept on creating chances. Both Salah and Marmoush should have scored, but they missed. It was an opportunity lost.
The Red Devils Kept The Pressure And Were Eventually Rewarded
The Red Devils kept up the pressure and were eventually rewarded with success. The pressure led to an own goal in the 66th minute, and Belgium levelled it up. Egypt absorbed all the pressure in the end to share the spoils with Belgium as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Action Moved To Miami For the Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay Contest
The action for the day then moved to Miami, where Saudi Arabia met the much-fancied Uruguay in an exciting Group H clash.
Al Amri Scores & then Al-Owais Takes Over
Saudi Arabia didn’t take a step back and matched Uruguay on the field with skill and speed, and against expectations scored in the 41st minute through Al-Amri. It was then a match between Uruguay and Mohammed Al-Owais, the Saudi Goalkeeper.
Breathtakingly Incredible Goalkeeping From Al-Owais To Keep Uruguay At Bay
The South Americans went on an attacking spree, but Al-Owais kept them at bay. With 10 shots on goal and 14 corners, Uruguay had control but were denied by some sensational goalkeeping, one of the best I have seen in a few years. It was breathtakingly incredible.
Uruguay Eventually Score But Saudis Rejoice With A Draw
Uruguay did equalise in the 80th minute through Araujo, but could not go further with Al-Owais standing like an impermeable wall. The Saudis snatched a draw, a good result for the Kingdom.
Iran vs New Zealand: A Significant Group G Contest
The last match of the day was a hugely significant one, not only in terms of the World Cup but also in terms of the global political situation amidst a raging war in the Gulf. Iran were due to play New Zealand in a Group G match at the LA Stadium in Inglewood.
Elijah Just Gives New Zealand The Lead
The match witnessed four impressive goals. New Zealand drew first blood in the 7th minute to shake up the Iranians. It was a smooth, composed finish from Elijah Just.
The Iranians Respond, but Fall Behind Again
The Iranians responded with a goal from Rezaeian in the 32nd minute to square up the match. The Black Caps again took the lead with a fine goal from Just, to put the pressure back on Iran.
The Famous Iranian Tenacity Ensures A Draw
The Iranians have been an extremely tenacious breed and fought back hard to once again equalise in the 64th minute, through Mohebi. A slugfest ensued, but the match ended in a draw. A great result for Iran in the backdrop of the turmoil at home.
What a day it was. All draws but great football and even greater character.
