Brighton Maul Chelsea

Brighton welcomed Chelsea to their American Express Stadium last night and dealt them three telling blows. The Blues bled red as if mauled by the Seagulls.

Brighton moved to the 6th position in the EPL table, 5 points below Liverpool, while Chelsea moved to 7th, thus severely jeopardising their quest for a Champions League spot.

Chelsea’s loss was more painful for the fans than even the 3-0 scoreline. It was the Blues’ 5th consecutive loss in the EPL, and that too without scoring a single goal. They had been blanked for the 5th consecutive time.

Robert Sanchez, Chelsea’s goalkeeper, made some stellar saves to keep the scoreline within limits; otherwise, it would have been a painful humiliation. On paper, Chelsea surely had a superior team despite the absence of Cole Palmer, but then Enzo Fernandez, Cucurella, Pedro Neto and Garnacho had to rise to the occasion, but failed to do so.

Brighton had more intent, and the coordination on the field was sublime. On several occasions, the forwards caught Chelsea’s back line sleeping and were unlucky to have scored only 3. Chelsea’s defence was in utter shambles, and the drooping shoulders made it a bad day for Chelsea. The Blues need some massive introspection.

I have nothing much to say on Rosenior’s performance, but Fabian Hürzeler, Brighton’s 33-year-old manager, has done some incredible work with his Seagulls.

Kudos to Brighton & Hove.
