Real Sociedad Win Copa Del Rey At Atletico Madrid’s Expense

Real Sociedad beat Atletico Madrid to win Copa Del Rey

Unai Marrero, the 24-year-old goalkeeper of Real Sociedad, was the hero last night in a thrilling Copa Del Rey final at La Cartuja Stadium in Seville. Marrero’s standout performance in the tie-breaker denied the more fancied Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad were crowned Copa Del Rey Champions for the 4th occasion.

Spain Descends At La Cartuja in Seville

La Cartuja was packed to the rafters as if Spain had descended on Seville in its entirety. The monarchy, too, could not resist the temptation of witnessing an expectedly fabulous contest. Diego Simeone’s side, fresh from beating Barcelona to qualify for the UEFA Champions League Semi-finals, was indeed the favourite. But in football, there are no favourites as such, and so it turned out.

Real Sociedad Score Early & Stay Ahead

Real Sociedad had their noses in front when they went ahead just after 14 seconds on the clock. Barrenetxea scored for Sociedad, and 18 minutes later, Lookman scored with a terrific finish, making it 1-1. Musso, Atletico’s goalkeeper, caused an infringement, and Oyarzabal scored at the stroke of half-time.

Brilliant From Julian Alvarez

It was a game in which Atletico were playing catch-up all the time despite dominating possession by far. Julian Alvarez struck a screamer in the 83rd minute to equalise for Atletico again. It was a phenomenal strike which lifted the crowd and Atletico fans to no end. It was truly world-class from Alvarez.

Marrero The Hero

The match eventually drifted towards a penalty shootout after a tired-looking extra time. Julian Alvarez, who had scored a ripper a few minutes ago, failed in his attempt from the spot. It was a brilliant save from Marrero. Marrero saved Sorloth’s attempt too to give Sociedad a real advantage.

Real Sociedad & A Great Basque Victory

Pablo Marin then struck a perfect spot kick to sink Atletico and help Real Sociedad lift the Copa del Rey deep in the night as fans leapt in utter joy.

A pulsating final and a tremendous Basque victory.
