Jannik Sinner got the better of the blistering wind, his own fears and Carlos Alcaraz to win his first Monte Carlo Masters on the Red Clay in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-3, last evening.
The Italian, in a rich vein of form, reclaimed the no. 1 spot in the ATP rankings from his bitter rival Alcaraz, to whom he had surrendered the top spot after losing the US Open final last year.
Sinner, with his third straight Masters victory after the Sunshine double, winning both at Indian Wells and Miami, equalled Novak Djokovic’s record of winning the Sunshine double and Monte Carlo in the same year.
It was a tough match, as both players struggled to navigate strong winds, resulting in several unforced errors. Sinner, however, raised his game when it really mattered, winning the first set in a tight tie-break.
In the second set, Alcaraz broke Sinner and took a 3-1 lead, but Sinner once again raised his game to win the next 5 and with it the set and match at Court Rainier III, in an incredible display of tennis from the World No. 1.
As the simmering Sinner-Alcaraz rivalry rages, Sinner at the moment is having a slight edge, though Alcaraz leads 10-7 overall, with the Red Clay season hots up.
