The historic Roses rivalry returns to Old Trafford tonight as Manchester United hosts Leeds United to close out Matchweek 32 of the English Premier League.
The Stakes Are High
Manchester United, looking to further strengthen their stranglehold on a Champions League Spot next season, will go all out to maintain their 3rd position in the EPL table. For Leeds United, it is a matter of survival with just 3 points above the relegation zone at no.15 in the English Premier League.
Recent Form
Since Michael Carrick took the reins in January, United have been formidable, losing only once in their last 14 league games. The transformation has been incredible to say the least, and the Red Devils have lost just once under Carrick’s stewardship, who is yet to lose at Old Trafford since taking charge. But the team hasn’t played for almost a month and may be a bit rusty coming onto the field.
Leeds have had a mixed season after returning to the Premier League, but their recent FA Cup quarter-final victory against West Ham has been a shot in the arm for them and would give them confidence going into Old Trafford. Precariously placed at 15th in the Premier League and just above the relegation zone, a win is what Leeds must be looking for.
History of The Roses Derby
Manchester United enjoy a clear advantage over Leeds, having gone unbeaten in 18 previous home meetings against the opponents. However, United played out a 1-1 draw at Elland Road when they last met. Clearly, the advantage is with United, and it is their game to lose.
United A Much Stronger Side on Paper
Manchester United have indeed a much more talented side than Leeds. Led by their warrior Bruno Fernandes, United have a host of good players in Mbeumo, Sesko, and Diallo, to name a few. But Harry Maguire would not be available tonight due to a suspension, which may create a gap in the back line. For Leeds, Calvert Lewin and Tanaka need to be at their best as Leeds might miss the services of Anton Stach.
What to expect
It is going to be an interesting game, with Manchester United being the overwhelming favourites to win this one.
