Last night Liverpool conceded a late goal for the umpteenth time this season and in doing so lost valuable points in the EPL. The defending Champions long ago had surrendered the title and with the 1-1 draw against a badly struggling Tottenham unit, the hopes of playing the Champions League next season appear greatly obscure.
Liverpool led for almost the entire game, but the malaise of conceding a goal in the end, continued to haunt the Reds. The 18th minute Dominik Szoboszlai goal was cancelled out by a 90th minute Richarlison strike from Tottenham, as bewildered fans looked on in a packed Anfield Stadium. The Sunday evening was literally spoiled for them.
Szoboszlai, who in my opinion and that of many Liverpool fans has been the only redeeming feature of the present Liverpool side, confessed to the perils of the team but said that he unfortunately had no clue as to why they were struggling.
Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk have had a terrible season. Alexis Mac Allister has been poor in the midfield. Salah has been completely off colour. Alexander Isak was a pale shadow of his brilliant run with Newcastle and with injury keeping him away from playing for almost the entire season, his purchase has been a waste so far.
Frimpong too has hardly played due to injuries and Florian Wirtz, has been another disappointment. But having said that what is Arne Slot’s role as Manager. Players cannot keep playing with the same intensity all the time, but the team still prospers. Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG are great examples of this.
Great teams just find a way to keep the momentum going. Liverpool lost to Galatasaray in Istanbul last week and even though they host the Turks at Anfield shortly, it is not going to be easy to beat the Turkish side handsomely and secure a quarter-final place in the Champions League.
In the FA Cup too, Liverpool are drawn to play Manchester City at the Etihad in the quarter finals on the 4th of April, which again would be a tough game and surely City would be the favourites.
With the EPL not going their way, and extremely tough challenges in both UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup, Liverpool are under pressure to survive and win some silverware this year. Arne Slot is without doubt facing the heat as it may be his final season with Liverpool.
