It was heartbreaking for Inter last season. The Nerazzurri were pipped to the post by Napoli to win the Serie A by just one point. Inter were cruising at one stage, but Napoli staged a late coup to snatch the title from Inter’s grasp. However, the story appears to be a bit different this season.
With 24 games played out so far in the Serie A, Inter, with 19 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses have acquired 58 points and are well placed at the top, 5 points ahead of arch rivals AC Milan and a good 9 points ahead of defending Champions Napoli.
Lautaro Martinez has been in scintillating form for his club, having scored 14 goals and assisted in 4. He tops the goal-scoring charts and individually has contributed to 18 of the 57 goals scored by Nerazzurri in Serie A so far. The Argentine looks unstoppable for Inter this season, and no wonder his performance in the remaining fixtures of Serie A will greatly determine Inter’s title-winning hopes.
With their long standing Manager Simone Inzaghi moving out last year, Inter signed their home-bred coach, Romanian Cristian Chivu, who has led to a seamless change in guard at the top. Chivu, who managed the club’s junior teams ( from under 17s to under 19s ), was an organic choice which has served Inter well.
The Nerazzurri have also benefited from fine performances from Federico Dimarco, who has been brilliant in the midfield. Nicolò Barella and Alessandro Bastoni too have done very well for Inter this season.
Inter have a tough game tonight as they host their age old rivals Juventus at the San Siro. It is a critical game. A win here will further tighten Inter’s grasp on the title, but if the Nerazzurri drop points, AC Milan and Napoli will be motivated to stage another coup against Inter Milan.
