Racing Club de Lens, commonly referred to as Lens, has impressed me this Ligue 1 season. Coached by Pierre Sage, the erstwhile Manager of Lyon, the Lens’ Red & Gold brigade have lit up Ligue 1 this season.
To take cudgels with Paris St Germain (PSG), the Parisian Club that won everything in its wake last season and dominated football across Europe and the world, was not going to be easy, but Lens are hanging on and refuse to rest.
After 21 games Lens was placed a close second, just 2 points behind leaders and defending champions PSG. Lens with 16 wins, a draw and 4 losses have kept the pressure on PSG. There was a stage in the competition when Lens, in fact, held the top spot for a while.
The Red & Gold have been a gritty lot and have fought their way hard into the competition. Odsonne Edouard and Wesley Said, with 8 goals each, have been terrific for Lens and have been major contributors to the tally of 37 goals scored by the team so far. Adrien Thomasson, Lens’ midfielder has been instrumental in feeding the forwards with his skilful play.
Ruben Aguilar too has been good for Lens, and with Allan Saint-Maximin back into the groove, Lens appear a dangerous side. The Club may not have big names in its fold, but have displayed tremendous determination. With a very organised defence, a good midfield and forwards who can finish, Lens may still turn the tables on PSG.
Lens will take on Paris FC on Saturday night, while PSG will play Rennes tonight. Every point will be crucial for both teams. A bit of a slip may prove costly.
Lens has a great chance and may just cause an upset this season in France.
