Egypt qualified for the Quarter-Finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a tough contest against a gritty Benin in Agadir.
The Pharaohs looked off colour for most of the match, missing chances galore. Benin too were determined to give the Egyptians a run for their money.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the 69th minute by an exceptional piece of work from Marwan Attia, Egypt’s brilliant central midfielder. His shot from well outside the box swirled and curled into the Benin net, sending the Egyptian fans into raptures.
Benin, however kept fighting and scored in stoppage time with the help of a lucky deflection, to push the match into extra time.
With legs tiring from both sides, came another exceptional goal from Egypt in the form of an amazing header from Yasser Ibrahim. The right back guided the ball superbly past Benin’s goalkeeper. It was a quality strike, giving Egypt a 2-1 lead in the 97th minute.
Salah eventually put the icing on the cake with a fine solo run and placed the ball expertly past Benin’s rushing goalkeeper. The Egyptian King came good when it mattered and closed out the match in style. The finish from him was indeed incredible.
Egypt triumphed 3-1 and made it to the quarters with a bit of a wobble.
