As the EPL season approaches the halfway mark, Arsenal seem to be in no mood to relinquish their perch at the top of the table. The Gunners got the better of Aston Villa in a most emphatic fashion at the Emirates, a couple of nights ago.
Interestingly, Aston Villa were on an 11-game winning streak in all competitions, and the Unai Emery-managed side had beaten Arsenal just 24 days ago. The gap at the top was slowly narrowing with Manchester City and Villa close on the heels and breathing down the neck of the Gunners.
The home fans, just a bit nervous with a slightly jittery-looking Arsenal, were hoping for a resounding performance from their team. And no wonder, the Gunners delivered big time and in doing so, instilled a strong sense of belief in themselves and the fans, that they can win it this time.
After a goalless first half, Gabriel got one through Villa for the Gunners to take the lead. Then Odegaard produced, in my opinion, one of the passes of the season, cutting the Villa defence in half down the middle. Zubimendi received it and finished in style to give Arsenal a two-goal advantage. The sublime play from the hosts lifted the fans and elevated the Gunners’ game.
A brilliant Trossard and Jesus added two more to the tally before a wasteful Ollie Watkins scored late for Villa. Arsenal recorded a massive 4-1 victory and, in the context of the Championship, a morale-boosting one.
The year thus ended brilliantly for Arsenal, with one of their finest performances of the year.
