Eland Road, home to Leeds United, witnessed an amazing comeback from its team against an enigmatic Liverpool last night. The grit of Leeds prevailed over the falling confidence of Liverpool in an exciting 6-goal draw.
Liverpool, sans Mo Salah for the 3rd consecutive game, got going with a brace from Hugo Ekitike, and it appeared as if the match was well within Liverpool’s grasp and was their game to lose.
The turning point of the game was waiting to arrive. Ibrahima Konaté, who has not been at his best in several games this year, helped Leeds United get a penalty with an avoidable tackle. The penalty in the 73rd minute opened the doors for Leeds, so to speak, as Calvert-Lewin converted the penalty with ease.
Liverpool had hardly recovered from the penalty when Anton Stach equalised for Leeds just 2 minutes later, leaving Liverpool in disarray. Though Szoboszlai made it 3-2 with a fine strike 5 minutes later, Leeds kept on believing more than the Reds.
Arne Slot initiated changes, bringing in Watanu Endo, in a move to thwart the determined Leeds Team and hang on to 3-2. But the hosts were not going home without a point as Ao Tanaka struck from close range in a set-piece scramble to send the fans into a crazy rumble. It was the 96th minute, and Liverpool had conceded a late goal for the umpteenth time this season.
There was jubilation all around Eland Road, whereas the Liverpool camp appeared stunned and distraught. A match which the defending champions could have won with some sensible play had ended in a draw.
Well done, Leeds United.
