Two days ago Aston Villa scraped past Brighton in an exciting contest. It was a high-octane match, and considering the fact that the Villans had an impending match against leaders Arsenal two days later, I was not expecting a great deal from Villa from that match. But I have been proved wrong.
Match Day 15 of the EPL got underway with Aston Villa, placed 3rd in the EPL, hosting leaders Arsenal at Villa Park in Birmingham.
Arsenal were at their best putting pressure on the Aston Villa goal, but Emi Martinez, one of the finest in the business, kept the Gunners at bay. Aston Villa picked up pace too, and though Ollie Watkins missed a sitter, Matty Cash’s right-footer got through David Raya, putting Aston Villa ahead. The goal in the 36th minute got the crowd going, building up the noise.
At half-time, Villa were ahead 1-0, but the Gunners came back with all guns blazing. Trossard was brought in in the second half by Mikel Arteta, and equalised in the 52nd minute.
Both Emi Martinez and David Raya denied the opposition as the game approached a pulsating draw. However, there was great drama waiting to unfold in the final moments.
Aston Villa laid siege to the Arsenal goal, but the Gunners defended with their bodies. As the final second approached, a goalmouth scramble ensued, and in the unsettling pandemonium, Argentinian Emi Buendia struck one past David Raya and the intervening bodies to give Aston Villa a great victory.
Villa Park virtually came down as the fans leapt with joy. Gunners endured their second loss in 15 games, a minor hiccup in their flawless campaign. Villa further strengthened their position at no. 3. A great win for Unai Emery.
