If you need some motivation and inspiration in life, there is nothing like watching a thrilling football match. Last night, for the umpteenth time and surely not the last, I witnessed another moment of sheer learning from sport. It was the 3rd Round of the EFL Carabao Cup between Swansea City and Nottingham Forest, with Swansea playing host.
Igor Jesus scored his first goal for Nottingham Forest and converted it into a brace as the Tricky Trees combined well to lead 2-0 at halftime. Swansea appeared slow and lacklustre, and it appeared as if the hosts were on their way out.
In the second half too, Nottingham had several chances to put the match to rest, but failed to score. Hudson-Odoi had two clear chances. One was stopped brilliantly by Andy Fisher, Swansea’s goalkeeper, and the other was a fairly straightforward one, which he drove outside the goal.
Swansea made an impression in the 68th minute when Cameron Burgess used his towering persona to head home his first goal for Swansea, having moved from Ipswich Town in the summer. Once he got to the ball, there was no one coming closer as Burgess guided the ball into the net.
Nottingham held on as the match entered stoppage time. Ange Postecoglou was on the verge of his first win in charge of the Tricky Trees. But that was not to be.
Three minutes into stoppage time Zan Vipotnik made it 2-2 with a fine strike, and then on the verge of the final whistle, Burgess, the Australian International, fired from a rebound off the goal post, beating the Forest goalkeeper for sheer pace. It was an amazing finish from Burgess.
Nottingham Forest were fired out of the competition from a seemingly winnable position, while Swansea made it to the Round of 16 from the brink of exit, ensuring that Postecoglou remained winless since taking over his new assignment.
Swansea City virtually staged a coup of sorts and gave their fans a lot to cheer.
Sport is just not about entertainment and winning and losing. It is about character, bravado, tenacity and hope. Swansea showed this all last night.
