As the 2025/26 season beckons, the Saudi Pro League, known as the Roshn Saudi League (RSL), is heating up like never before. The League is gaining prominence and is slowly but steadily becoming a sought after destination, attracting sublime talent and exquisite experience from around the world.
It is now a myth that great players, only in the twilight of their careers, are making their way to the kingdom. Young players, too, are taking the gauntlet to showcase their skills in the green sands of Saudi Arabia. Mateo Retegui is one of the prominent ones to have taken the leap.
A brilliant striker, Mateo Retegui was the highest goal scorer in Serie A in the last concluded season. Playing his first season with Atalanta after moving from Genoa, Retegui was exceptional in front of goal and scored 25 times to beat the field of strikers comfortably.
An Argentine by birth and Italian by roots, the 26-year-old Retegui has already donned Italian colours and plays for the Italian National Team. His rise has been phenomenal from Boca Juniors to Serie A in Italy, and now with a massive €65m transfer to Saudi Aramco-owned Al Qadsiah.
Based in the Eastern Province of Khobar, adjoining the city of Dammam, Al Qadsiah has made massive strides in Saudi Football after the arrival of Spanish coach Michel in 2023. From the first division, Michel transformed Al Qadsiah into a club of reckoning. First, he ensured promotion of the Club to the Saudi Pro League and then put on a sensational performance to grab the no. 4 position on the league table in the 24/25 season. The Team also made it to the King’s Cup Final.
The Club known as the Knight of the East ( Fares Al Sharqiyah), would be pushing to give the top 3 clubs in Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Champions Al Ittihad a good run for their money. No wonder Mateo Retegui would be a strong weapon in their armoury.
The world can’t wait to see Retegui fire for Al Qadsiah.
