Sabalenka Digs Deep To Get Past Siegemund
Aryna Sabalenka, the World No. 1 and in hot pursuit of her maiden Wimbledon Title, had to dig deep and use every ounce of her energy to beat a belligerent and stubbornly tough opponent, the German Laura Siegemund, in the Ladies’ Quarter-Finals at Wimbledon last night.
Plucky Siegemund, But Sabalenka Fights
It was advantage Siegemund early in the match as the German seized the initiative and won the first set. She kept the ball in play with amazing consistency. Unable to pass Siegemund, got Sabalenka frustrated, which left her trailing in the match. In the second set however, Sabalenka got her mojo back. Her extremely powerful serves and equally powerful groundstrokes, got the better of Siegemund as Sabalenka won the second set to pull the match to an even keel.
Drama In The Third Set…
The third set witnessed high drama as Siegemund got ahead and looked to create an upset. Her cool temperament, tremendous court coverage and the ability to surprise Sabalenka with deft drop shots, had the world no. 1 in disarray.
… But Sabalenka Holds Nerves To Beat Siegemund
Sabalenka, however, showed why she is the no. 1 player in the world. Trailing 2-4 in the final set, Sabalenka pulled off 4 straight games to win the set and the match. Siegemund, just wobbled at the end as her nerves showed up. She was close to the finish line, but choked in crucial moments to let the match slip.
A More Than Determined Sabalenka To Face Anisimova In Semis
Sabalenka, to my surprise showed great temperament to stay in the match and eventually win it. She is determined to go all the way and her performance against Siegemund is a reflection of that determination. It was a real battle with Sabalenka coming through 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the end. Sabalenka will meet Amanda Anisimova in the semis.
Brilliant Anisimova Subdues Pavlyuchenkova
The American has been Sabalenka’s nemesis in the past and holds a 5-3 record against the Belorussian. Anisimova came through in straight sets against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, after facing 5 set points in the second set Tie- Breaker and blowing away 3 match points of her own. It was a terrific performance from Anisimova, eventually winning 6-1,7-6 with the American winning the tie-breaker 11-9. No wonder she will be a handful for Sabalenka on Thursday.
Some great action lined up at Wimbledon this week.
