Cilic Upsets Draper
The reign of upsets continued at Wimbledon, with Jack Draper, the 4th seed, a title contender and a great British hope, losing to comeback man and former Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic.
Some Questions On Draper
It is important to note that Jack Draper, who is so highly rated, had gone down to Bublik a few weeks ago at the French Open when a lot was expected of him, and here again at Wimbledon, losing in Round 2, has raised some questions in my mind.
Cilic Was Tactically Superior
Marin Cilic peppered Jack Draper’s weak backhand in the entire match. The short and weak returns on most occasions from Draper gave Cilic a great advantage. Cilic was tactically much superior to Draper, and his team deserved all the compliments for studying Draper’s game so well.
Draper Was Too Predictable
Jack Draper, on the other hand, was poor on his second serve ( winning just 46% of second serve points) and further just did not approach the net to unsettle Cilic. It was all too surprising. The Brit has a good serve, but volleys were completely missing from his repertoire yesterday. Cilic was happy to sit back and play towards the Draper back hand. Gone are the days when we enjoyed seeing some brilliant exponents of serve and volley like Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer. No wonder they won a plethora of Wimbledon titles amongst them.
Draper Needs To Work On His Temperament Too
Barring a bit of a blip in the third set, which Draper won 6-1, that raised the hopes of the crowd, Cilic was on the money and completed the formality in 4 sets with Jack Draper crumbling at 4-5 to stay in the match. The Brit needs to work on his mental strength, too. Great players of the past and even the present have won from impossible positions. The French Open Final between Alcaraz and Sinner stands out as a prime example.
Sensational Cilic – Easy Winner
Marin Cilic eventually emerged victorious with a 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 scoreline. The Croatian is making a great comeback after a serious knee injury that kept him out of competitive Tennis for long. The 36-year-old will not be easy to dislodge and would be playing Spain’s Juame Munar in the 3rd Rd on Saturday.
A lot of work to be done by Jack Draper before he comes close to winning a Grand Slam.
